He was sure of only two things at the time:
1) He was about to get hit by a car. And it was probably going to hurt, which meant hospital bills that he couldn’t afford, and having to buy a new car because his little tri-coloured nightmare was surely going to get ruined.
2) Ronan Lynch was standing at the other end of the parking lot, beside Gansey’s obnoxiously orange Camaro, his face fixed in a mask of horror.
Except he hadn’t been, had he? Because Ronan’s shockingly cold hand had wrapped around Adam’s waist right at the last minute and had yanked him out of the way. There was no physically possible way for Ronan to cross the distance so fast, to get him out of the way.

Summary
Ronan never volunteered to pick Parrish up for school. He wanted to stop him every single time; for one thing, if he drove Parrish right to the front door, Gansey would force him to go in.
For another, whenever he saw all the new bruises the elder Parrish had bestowed upon his son, he felt the overwhelming urge to turn right around and beat the shit out of him in return. After that urge passed, he had to fight the urge to take the boy home, carry him up the stairs and tend to every single bruise, hold him tight and promise with the utmost certainty that he would never have to go back to that place again.
So, Ronan Lynch never volunteered to pick up Adam Parrish for school.

“Baby, there you are, you’re late for date night,” Adam exclaimed, his voice saccharine sweet. Ronan heard him but does not comprehend. Was he dreaming or did Adam Parrish just call him baby? Adam wrapped his arm around Ronan’s waist, which was about 150x more physical contact than Adam had ever made with any of them.
Adam leaned and pulled Ronan in even closer, warmth from his body radiating. Ronan shifted up, and whispered, “Parrish, what the fuck are you doing.”

Summary
It was impossible to pinpoint the exact moment their relationship had become this undefined, ever-shifting nebulous of yearning, but somewhere along the line Adam had brushed Ronan's arm or held his gaze a little too long or done something equally simple and beautiful, and suddenly everything Ronan thought he understood was rendered null and void.
The trouble with the pair of them was that being around Adam made Ronan careful and being around Ronan made Adam reckless, and Ronan loved Adam so much it made him sick and Adam didn't know. This particular combination of traits — coupled with Blue and Gansey's total absorption in one another as of late — was what led to torturous nights like these.
