Summary
Plans aren’t meant to be lasting things.
Sure, some can go off without a hitch, with the right people participating and a whole bunch of luck, but Newgate is too used to problems popping up right away or else getting backstabbed at the last minute. Sometimes a plan looks perfect on paper, with careful timing and a few back-up options layered in and some space for improvising if necessary - only for it to turn out there’s three times as many marines or royal guards waiting in the first room, and the new plan immediately becomes ‘hit hard and run fast’.
All of which is to say, he expected this plan of Graham’s to go off the rails fairly quick.
But not so badly.
Not with such a high cost.

Even in his- not old age, his advancing years- even in his advancing years, Zeff’s sense of smell is nothing but sharp and highly discerning. He can tell the difference between meat still fit to cook versus what’s too rotted by a matter of hours, his nose is capable of picking out a single patch of particular berries in the middle of a whole forest, and even without looking, he’s aware when there is any sort of knight or princeling within a mile of his cave that needs chasing off.
Other dragons might rely on their ears for the sound of jingling chainmail or clattering plate armor, but Zeff always sneezes at the slightest whiff of wax and polish used to keep those tin cans shiny. No annoying gnat of a knight who’d come looking to fight him would ever go without, they’re a vain lot and no mistake.
This one, though.

There’s a reason Paulie is Iceburg’s favorite brother and not Franky’s. Very good reason.

“Luke,” Percy guessed, the name coming out sharp and bitter. “You work for Luke.” The other person he spent five years thinking would always be there if he or Annabeth needed help. Luke and Thalia, steadfast and comforting and always with a good word of advice, until apparently that wasn’t enough for the son of Hermes anymore. Until his anger at the gods outgrew his love for the three of them.

“KR-five-two, follow.” Chief Scientist Desmond is to be obeyed quickly and without question, at all times. Kon sets down the equipment he was earlier instructed to hold, then hurries to the correct position of one step to the left and two steps behind. Desmond didn’t even bother to look at him when giving the command, nor does he check if the Seraphim is actually following - he gives orders, and they are obeyed, end of story.
(Other scientists in the facility will tolerate momentary delays, or the odd question, if phrased respectfully. Kon’s brothers have found every intangible boundary, and made sure he learned them quickly, the better to avoid harsh, painful lessons.)
