‘Do you ever wonder what you’re doing here?’ Posner asks.
‘At Oxford?’
‘Anywhere. What the point of it all is.’
Posner feels Scripps shift beside him. ‘I don’t think anyone knows the answer to that. God would say worship. Jesus would say love.’
‘And what would you say?’
Scripps falls silent as he ponders the question. Then: ‘I think it’s being with the people you care about. Finding moments of quiet. Looking for beauty.’
Posner smiles bitterly. ‘I don’t think I could find it if I tried.’

Posner navigates adult life and everything that comes with it, both the good and the bad. Thankfully, Scripps is there through it all, in confusingly fluctuating capacities as friend and lover.
Rated M for some pretty heavy mental health stuff, a suicide attempt by OD (though not in graphic detail), and sexual content (again, not super graphic, but there are sex scenes). Triggers for individual chapters will be in the notes. Please be careful! This is angsty, but I swear it ends happily.
Title is from As I Walked Out One Evening by Auden.

“Said he had a couple of books you were after, is all,” Lockwood clicks his tongue, finishes his cake and flicks the wrapper at Scripps’s chest. “Anyway, I’d best be off. I’ve half a float of milk left to unload on some poor bastards. See you Monday, lads.”
He gives a half-hearted wave as he sees himself out, and Scripps finds himself inundated by particularly exhausted office staff for the next half hour, so doesn’t have chance to think any more on it.

It wasn’t until a week later that Posner cornered Scripps in the philosophy section in Blackwell’s and jabbed him in the chest with A Treatise of Human Nature, and in hindsight Scripps could admire his restraint, because the first words out of his mouth were, “Why does Archie Bernard think you and Dakin are sleeping together?”
