Summary
Matrix trilogy is often interpreted as a story of finding yourself in that Neo wakes up from a simulation and with the help and guidance of others finally finds his own purpose. The villain in the movie, Agent Smith, is created by the machines to obey them, but later by Neo’s help is able to act on his own. The story of Smith is often portrayed as a digital intelligence that cannot understand humans and his actions are depicted as chaotic and without meaning.
However, the movies can also be read so that in addition to Neo, Smith is also searching himself, but unlike Neo, he does not succeed in it. We can think that Smith and Neo are in more ways similar and share the same potential, but the environment they live is completely different. Where Neo finds guidance and help is Smith left alone with his thoughts, trapped in a role of an Agent and even after freeing from the system his is seen as an outcast. These differences fail to support Smith to find himself in a same way than Neo.
