If Rose came back now, Pearl wouldn’t fall into her arms. She doesn’t know what she would do, and it leaves her unsteady. The anger seems like it could swallow her whole, sometimes, and in those moments she thinks about how she should have been angry this whole time.
After Spinel, Pearl talks to her friends. She copes.

“Was it terrifying for you? Being new again?”
If she’s honest… “Not really. When I was first formed, I was all by myself. This time, I had all of you around. Greg paid attention to me. Steven cared enough to come find me when I wandered off. It was…I wish it had been like that the first time, but I’m glad I have those memories.” She runs through the events of the day in her head. “I can super understand why it wouldn’t be that way for you, though.”
Pearl nods. “There’s something I want to talk to Greg about, but…I kind of also never want to see him again. After he saw me like that.”
“I get it, P, but you can’t avoid Greg forever.” Amethyst put a reassuring hand on Pearl’s back at her heavy sigh. “From what I remember, all he cared about was keeping us safe and getting our memories back.”
Pearl collapses a little, then, and Amethyst takes the excuse to fold Pearl into her arms. Pearl clings, sobs hitching in her throat. “We were becoming friends,” Pearl says. “What if he liked me better like that?”
Amethyst pulls back just so she can look Pearl in the eyes as she says “That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard.”
Pearl’s shoulders relax a fraction as she laughs, and when Amethyst stands up to go back to the temple, Pearl stands too.
.
“Was Rose ever…unkind to you?”It seems like the kind of question Greg ought to take a moment to think about, so he does. “She kept a lot of secrets from me. To an extent, I understood that, and accepted it but…do you really want to know?”
Without looking at him, Pearl nods.
“I love Steven more than anything, Pearl, anything. You know that. But when Rose told me that she was having him…I hadn’t even known that she could do that. If she’d asked me if I wanted to have a kid, if I was ready to be a dad…I would have said no. But she didn’t give me a say. When things like that happened, when she was…incommunicative, I always chalked it up to a cultural thing. But since I’ve gotten to know the rest of you better…I know that it isn’t. You and Garnet and Amethyst have kept secrets from me, yeah, but not just so you’d get your way. Not like she did.” He pauses. Pearl is unreadable, still turned away from him with her arms crossed. “Is that the kind of thing you were asking about?”
She nods.
“Steven told me what happened to Spinel.”
At that, Pearl flinches. “Spinel didn’t deserve that,” she says, and Greg has no idea if she’s only talking about Spinel.
Either way… “No, she didn’t.”
.
Pearl will be staring at the picture of Rose that hangs next to the door. If Garnet waits another minute, Pearl will draw her spear and throw it at the picture, breaking the frame beyond repair and tearing the picture itself. She’ll be flooded with guilt and inconsolable over it, and still she’ll try to choke it down, try to characterize her anger as some personal inadequacy.Garnet walks out of the temple in time and heads straight for her, gathering her into a hug. Pearl goes almost limp in her arms, as if relieved that she hadn’t done what she’d been about to do. She’s crying, pointlessly trying to keep Garnet from seeing. Garnet tightens her hold and Pearl’s arms snake around her waist, and they stay like that for a long while.
“I don’t know if I love her anymore,” Pearl whispers, as if she doesn’t really want Garnet to hear.
“You don’t have to love her.” Garnet puts on her most authoritative voice to say it, lacing the words with the weight of her belief that it’s true.
**
If Rose came back now, Pearl wouldn’t fall into her arms. She doesn’t know what she would do, and it leaves her unsteady. The anger seems like it could swallow her whole, sometimes, and in those moments she thinks about how she should have been angry this whole time.
She should have been angry when Rose pushed Pearl’s hands over her lips, guaranteeing her secret would stay hers alone to keep, but all she’d felt then was the softness of Rose’s touch on her hands and the sting of Rose’s distrust, a small, pitiful wish that Rose hadn’t felt the need to use magic to keep her silent.
She should have been angry every time Rose almost left her, every time she expected Pearl to be passive and encouraging as she gushed about some new human. She’s only hated herself, back then, for not being enough to satisfy Rose.
She should have been angry when Rose had asked her to stay and fight for earth – the moment she realized that Rose only ever asked her questions that she already knew the answer to.

Pearl would imagine throwing herself in front of Garnet, and telling her the truth. The whole of it.
It’s my fault, mine! I’m the reason they’re gone! I faked Pink Diamond’s death, this was all vengeance on behalf of a Gem that’s whole and well—
But she’d choke on her own words.
Garnet would notice. No matter how lost she was in her visions, sooner or later, she always noticed. And she, or Ruby and Sapphire, would wrap an arm or two around Pearl’s slender frame, and rub her back, an offer of silent comfort. Even though they didn’t understand what precisely they were comforting her for, Pearl would accept, and offer comfort back.
Later, she decided, this was for the best. What consolation would the truth have given Garnet? Either way, their friends were all gone.
.
She wasn’t sure if she’d ever be able to take him into space— they had no working ships left, none at all.
She could tell him about it, though. Not just these generalities. About the other planets she’d seen, the space systems she’d flown through. The radiant colours of nebulae, planets that were covered entirely in oceans, floating cities which could only be built where gravity was only a fraction of Earth’s.
… but she’d seen all of that in service to the Diamond Authority.
There were ways around the binding, of course. Pearl was clever. She knew she could be vague in the right places, direct the focus of the descriptions. Those tales wouldn’t have to risk Rose’s secret.
But what if Steven asked? What if Amethyst did, or— or Garnet? No, Garnet wouldn’t, she’d always respected Pearl’s reluctance to speak about her past, but the other two—
Pearl didn’t know what would happen, and it scared her.
.
“I saw the traitorous Rose Quartz shatter Pink Diamond with my own eye!”
Pearl’s hands flew to her mouth automatically. She wasn’t even planning to say something, but the thought of That’s not what happened was still enough to trigger it.
.
Of course, even if she could speak, she wouldn’t have done so there, surrounded by enemy Rubies. That was something she’d have chosen to share in private. Just for her family, as Steven would have called them.
But it wasn’t a choice, was it?
.
Her memories swam with protocols for questioning, trials, imprisonment and executions. There should be time to get to him before he was shattered, but...
-but what if those protocols had changed? What if, when confronted by an ‘assassin’, the Diamonds rushed immediately to the harshest punishment?
If only Steven knew. If only Pearl had told him. She had no idea if it really would have helped, if he would have believed her, or the Diamonds would have believed him, or what the fallout would have been be if they had. But surely anything, anything, would be better than this.
This is my fault, she thought, eyes misting up so violently she couldn’t see the tools in front of her.
And then: No. This is Pink Diamond’s.
Later, when Steven tore away from her, tears running down his face, oblivious to the words Pearl was choking on, she thought: No. Rose’s fault.
.
After it was all done, Pearl felt untethered.
Something around her throat had loosened. For millennia, she’d always been bound to someone. Now, that final pink rope had been cut, and she felt like a human boat with a broken sail, slack and directionless.

Summary
In the aftermath of A Single Pale Rose, everything falls apart.
-
Bookmark Notes:
“I’m sorry I kept it from you,” Pearl said, her eyes not leaving Amethyst’s hurt ones. Even the little allusion to Rose’s secret had her hands twitching and a prickle in her mind, warning her that she was trying to disobey her Diamond’s order.
“It seems like it wasn’t your fault, P,” Amethyst said, and her voice was so sure, so full of compassion, that Pearl found her eyes starting to overflow with tears. It was ridiculous—she’d lived with the truth for millennia, what right did she have to be crying right now, when Amethyst was in the midst of grappling with it for the first time?
But…it wasn’t your fault. Those words hit at something deep inside of Pearl that she hadn’t known was crying out to her. It was guilt over a war fought on false pretenses, all the gems that had died because of it, all the pain she’d caused Steven—
But if Amethyst was right, she hadn’t done that. Of course she hadn’t done it on purpose. She hadn’t had the power to do anything different. Because for all her talk, all she’d become and all she’d accomplished, she still wasn’t free. Her Diamond was gone, Rose was gone, maybe forever, and she still wasn’t free.
Amethyst walked over from the kitchen and settled next to Pearl on the couch, legs tucked away underneath her, making her look even smaller than usual. A second later she had Pearl in a tight hug, face pressing into Pearl’s shoulder with an intimacy that was somehow comforting and upsetting all at once.
.
“Sapphire’s mad that Rose lied, for all that time. I guess I’m a little mad about that too, but,” Amethyst shrugged, which was a little awkward in their intertwined position. “I wasn’t there for the war. I didn’t kill anyone or watch my friends die because of her. I’m madder about what she did to you.”Pearl shuddered again, and Amethyst shut up, probably sensing that Pearl couldn’t take any more compassion right now. She already felt like everything terrible inside her was right at the surface, exposed for all to see. “I could have found a way to tell you,” Pearl whispered, one more admission that she had to get out while Amethyst was listening, while, for some reason, she still hadn’t pulled away.
“Maybe. But that wasn’t your responsibility. Rose should have told us. And she really shouldn’t have silenced you.”

Steven being teleported out of Pearl’s gem. Neither gem even knew Pearl could do something like that, though considering the fact that out of all of them, she managed to store a good deal of items inside her gem, it wasn’t too surprising, but Steven wasn’t exactly an item.
.
“I…there is something going on and unfortunately, I’m not the right gem to explain it to you. Not because I don’t want to, but because I can’t.” Blue eyes met green, as Pearl tried to get the smaller gem to get the gist of what she was saying.
“Do you understand, Peridot?”
Honestly, no, she didn’t, but she wasn’t going to say that. If Pearl was trying to tell her that the situation at hand was something she was unable to explain, the engineer understood that; regardless of who she was now, Pearl was still…well…a pearl and if she ever had an owner, they could compel her to not say anything about /anything/ should they request it.
What she didn’t understand was the context in which a previous order was now coming back to her /now/.
.
Pearl had wanted to tell Steven the truth for so long, to tell the others the secret she had been hiding for over several millennia, but unable to because of that damned order given to the very Diamond she had happily served. Even now, when it had counted, she couldn’t confirm or deny anything Steven told Amethyst and Garnet and worse, should those three have any questions, she wouldn’t be able to say anything.
.
Granted, she didn’t know Rose during the rebellion and the war, but she did know the gem and finding out that, well, she wasn’t who she really said she was did sting something fierce, but like Greg, Rose Quartz was real to them and that was the person they loved and cherished. And Amethyst was sure Pearl felt the same way – you had to be blind not to see that the thin gem’s feelings were well past a decorated comrade, but those feelings had grown during the ‘Rose’ portion of her life.
That Amethyst would stake her favorite motor oil on.
She wasn’t sure if Peridot knew, given that Pearl couldn’t say one friggin’ thing about this to anyone, which meant no one had actually told her what was happening.
.
Sometimes they could be seriously selfish – did Ruby just not care about the fact that Steven might be upset? Or Pearl? Having to keep that secret with no way of telling anyone, even when she desperately wanted to was bogus. Amethyst loved Rose, she truly, absolutely did, but learning about some of the stuff she did made her mad and just…
Disappointed.
[.] Amethyst let it go. She knew how this went and for Steven and Pearl’s sake, she’d go along with it. She knew all about how to smile when on the inside you were just crashing down.
.
Pink Diamond had manufactured a rebel gem in the form of Rose Quartz and had ordered her own pearl – Pearl, their first friend, someone they trusted the same way they had Bismuth and Ro… - to keep her mouth shut on events that had been falsified.
What if that simple statement had been more than a statement? What if it had been a direct order? From a Diamond to one of her subjects?
.
Pearl looked, well in a word, devastated. Connie liked to think she had forged a kinship of friendship with her teacher, something could one day be unique between just the tow of them and in all that time, Connie couldn’t ever recall the look on Pearl’s face now.
There was guilt, a heavy amount if she guessed right, but also a resignation that the pre-teen had never seen before.
.
“It’s…possible,” Pearl whispered, before one of her hands instantly flew to cover her mouth. She tried her best to remove, a muffled scream of frustration filling the stunned silence. Connie watched in horrified fascination as her mentor wrestled with her own hand, before turning her attention to Steven.
Once the muffled scream had rung out, the teen had immediately flinched, his face filling with guilt. “It’s possible and it happened,” he said, looking away. “Pearl was there.”
.
Was Pearl…/the pearl/ to Pink Diamond??
Peridot had always suspected that Pearl had been made for a higher purposed gem, but she had thought a morganite or maybe a sapphire, but a Diamond?
.
for every good deed she did, Rose managed to pull ten bad ones on people she pretended to care and love
.
2
She had seen that look on Pearl’s face before, the one enemies got to briefly see before they were cut down with a sword or her spear.
.
that’s what hurt more than anything. Sapphire knew Pearl hadn’t done this deliberately; even without the whole story, which she knew Steven had only given the most important facts, the notion that…Pink Diamond had silenced Pearl and then never once thought to lift that direct hurt the seer – and the pearl – more than they thought possible.

“Garnet...you know who I served during the war.”
“...Pink Diamond. You were her pearl; it was how we were able to spy on their plans.”
Pearl nodded, fingers gripped hard into the wood of the balcony. “Yes, except… I was only on loan to her. There was a pearl made specifically for Pink Diamond, one that matched her, too well actually. She had Pink’s gem placement and a more impulsive personality. She ended up being...taken away by White Diamond.”Pearl shuddered and shook her head as she remembered a hollow smile and bleached skin. “I was transferred to Pink Diamond until a new, more suitable pearl could be made for her.”
Garnet’s hands uncrossed and shock was now apparent on her face. “Pearl, are you saying…are you saying you were White Diamond’s Pearl?”
Pearl nodded, “Yes. I was due to be returned to her soon when the war took the turn it did.”
Amethyst’s mouth was also agape. “So wait, one you spied on the diamonds, damn Pierogi. Two, you know the gem that is literally the ruler of the entire Gem Empire and you never told us?”Pearl wrapped her arms around herself and squeezed her eyes shut. “It…it wasn’t a pleasant time in my life Amethyst. I don’t even really like thinking about it,” her voice lowered until it was barely audible, “being her pearl was hell.”
.
Pearl felt crushed under the force of White’s will. She caught herself thinking of White as her master and quickly corrected it, but still felt her mouth move. “N-no. I have no idea what you want with me. I don’t understand why you didn’t just shatter me. I’m just a pearl!”“Shatter you?” White Diamond laughed. “Why would I do that? Because you decided to become a part of some half-baked rebellion on a backwater colony? I suppose you are just a pearl, and I suppose my fondness is…illogical. You were made for me though, to be similar to me, the perfect pearl, for the perfect diamond. I had assumed you were corrupted or shattered in the planet-wide attack on Earth. Even then I had wanted to extract you before the final assault, but the situation simply didn’t allow it.”
White pulled up a screen as she continued to talk. “Then I learned you were still functional. I saw the footage from that fiasco of a “rescue” you and your little companions pulled at the human zoo. I was so thrilled when I saw you, especially as you gloated over Holly Blue. Yellow and Blue had absolutely no idea the little scheme you pulled under their noses, they were too busy wallowing in their own sorrow. But I saw, and I saw a pearl exceeding the limitations of her design. Naturally, I decided I needed to bring you back under my care. Hone these newly evolved skills, learn how to adapt your ability to grow while snuffing out the needless rebelliousness. Should be an interesting experiment with several potential discoveries to better all of Gemkind.”

“I can’t see Bismuth.” The way Garnet solemnly removed her sunglasses nearly drew Pearl to her like a moth to a flame, a desperate yearning to comfort the fusion gem overcoming her. “I don’t see her in any of my visions.”

Garnet and Rose didn’t bother to check if Pearl was following them because she was loyal to a fault.
If they had bothered to look behind them, they would have noticed Pearl clasping her hands around her mouth, silently thanking Rose for forbidding her from revealing their secret because for the first time in her life she was tempted to betray her.
After all, Bismuth was her friend too.
.
“What was Pink Diamond like?” she looked up at Pearl with the innocence of a small human. “How did Rose shatter someone so big?”Pearl gasped and sank to her knees and if she had lungs – she would have been gasping for air. Amethyst had only asked an innocent question about the gem she had admired so much and her greatest triumph, but nothing could stop the feeling of being crushed by a big tidal wave of emotions. In Pearl’s books she thought it was ridiculous how humans used metaphors like ‘her lungs were on fire’ or ‘the ocean waves strangled her’ to describe the sensation of drowning, but right now Pearl could almost empathise with those organic creatures who had experienced that level of suffocation, a feeling of being hopelessly trapped by a force of nature that just wouldn’t let go of you once it had you in its clutches.
“Pearl? Pearl, please don’t cry!” she could faintly hear Amethyst calling out for her. “I’m sorry Pearl!”
Before she could even attempt to respond, Pearl could faintly hear Garnet in the background consoling Amethyst and asking her to go find Rose. Pearl’s heart ached when she could hear the tiny pitter patter of panicked feet going to find their mother figure and she gasped: “I’m so sorry Amethyst, I’m so sorry!”
“Hey, it’s not your fault.” Garnet said, putting a comforting arm around her and whispering sweet nothings in her ear. “Amethyst will be fine. And you’ll be okay too. Pink Diamond is not here and she’s not coming back. Rose made sure of that.”
.
“She can’t have a baby because-”Pearl left Homeworld and everything she knew behind for Rose.
Pearl didn’t put up a fight when Pink Diamond ordered her to stay silent for Rose.
Pearl stayed trapped on this miserable planet for Rose.

“Steven, you don’t have anything to apologize for,” said Garnet. “You haven’t done anything wrong. None of this is your fault.”
Steven burst into tears and Garnet quickly wrapped her arms around him, pulling him tightly against her.
“I thought- you- you and Amethyst- I thought that you were gonna- that you hated me now,” he stuttered through his tears, hugging himself.
“Steven, there is nothing that you could ever do that would make me stop loving you,” Garnet firmly stated.
“But- but you unfused and you- and Ruby and Sapphire- they- they and Amethyst ran - and Pearl- Pearl stayed, but she already- but Pearl already knew - but you and Amethyst-” he broke off, sniffling.
God, she thought, I handled this horribly. I should have seen the truth about Rose. At the very least I should’ve known how this would affect Steven! She took a deep breath. She couldn’t fall apart again, look at what that led to last time.
“Steven, I’m not mad at you and I definitely don't hate you. We’re just upset with Rose for not telling us. She always said that the truth was the most important thing, but she lied about her identity for over 5,000 years. I’m not mad at Pearl either, she couldn’t have told me if she tried,” Garnet explained. “I promise, Steven, I’m not mad at you at all.”
