"They're not being fair to you, you know." Lapis sounds casual- almost deceptively so. Pearl doesn't look up from the ocean waves lapping at her feet. She hasn't moved from her position on the beach for what feels like years, not even when Lapis first came down to see her, when she knew that Lapis knew. Steven must have told her, too."Why do you say that?" Pearl asks. Her throat feels tight. Lapis sits down next to her, neatly folding her legs beneath her. Her skirt bells out around her, reminding Pearl of her old-
No, that doesn't matter anymore. She doesn't wear frills and skirts and flounces anymore. They aren't suited for wartime. She isn't a decoration piece anymore. Peridot had called her a fancy pearl and she'd almost kicked the little green gem's teeth in.
"Blaming you," Lapis says simply. Pearl turns to look at her then. Her eyes are almost as blank and mysterious as they had been when her gem was still cracked.
"They- I deserve it," Pearl says, eyes burning. "They have a right to be angry. Rose kept something so important from them for thousands of years, and I-"
"Ruby and Sapphire know what it means for a pearl to be given a direct order from their diamond," Lapis interrupts. Now her voice is hard and thin and skates the edge of something Pearl can't quite identify. "You couldn't. Steven told me what she did." Lapis crosses her hands in front of her and Pearl feels cold.
"She thought it was for the best," Pearl whispers. "No one should ever know, it- the rebellion would have fallen to pieces if people knew."
"She could have told them after the war," Lapis says. "She could have released you. You can't even say it now, can you? Now that it's out in the open?"
"Rose-" Before Pearl can even think of saying another word, her hands slam against her mouth with almost punishing force. Her eyes fill with tears and Lapis stares at her with something that should be pity.
"She never let you go," Lapis says. "You never stopped being trapped."
"I didn't mind it- I-" Pearl stops. She doesn't know how she feels anymore. Her mouth hurts from the impact of her fingers, Pink Diamond's last order still reverberating down the centuries.
"I'm sorry," Lapis says quietly.

Summary
Nora had spent the vast majority of her life on Homeworld. There was a short period that she spent on Earth, but that had more to deal with interacting and helping the gems there than it did anything else. If she ever wanted human interaction, she would have to go to the human zoo that her mother had created long ago.
Even after she had finally got White, Yellow, and Blue Diamond to listen to her, they we're still tyrants. Things were only a little better for humans and things didn't get better for the vast majority of gems. The only few that had some semblance of freedom were the gems on her own personal court, but that wasn't very many.
Even after everything, even when they finally came to an understanding of some sort, Nora wasn't really a ruler. She was just a face that people could look at and look up to with no actual deeds behind it.
And then she wakes up in some strange box. With more humans gathered in one space than she's seen in a lifetime. She had somehow come to another world filled to the brim with life other than gems. With a world that was rich with natural resources. For once, she thinks she understood how her mother felt. But she needed to get home.

In the half-instant between confusion and settling into disdain, Pearl lets herself consider.
Amethyst explains, "It’s Steven Tag! Steven tagged you…"
Perhaps she'll play this time. And why not? These games are innocent enough, and even respectable if Garnet is playing. (In the years since Rose, that has frequently been her benchmark—what Garnet deems appropriate to engage in.) And it’s true that on Homeworld, a Pearl would never engage in such trivial and rambunctious leisure activities—would never, for that matter, engage in leisure activities at all—but this isn’t Homeworld, and, Pearl reminds herself, she belongs to nobody, she’s free, just like Pink wanted…
Amethyst continues: "…now you have to turn into Steven!"
Something inside Pearl’s Gemstone lurches.
You just have to turn into Rose Quartz, jab me with the sword, and then we’ll be done! It’s going to be easy!
She hasn’t shapeshifted since that night in the Palanquin, five thousand years ago. She can't. And, generally, it’s easy to pass off her distaste for it as haughtiness. But this is categorically different, it’s too similar, to transform into Steven, another one of her forms…again…when last time, she’d had to...Pink...and then, all that Corruption...her fault...
(She hadn’t wanted to.)
(But her Diamond had wanted it, and she’d wanted her Diamond to be happy, and so she convinced herself…she’d always convinced herself…Her Diamond had wanted it, and so really Pearl did want it. She did. She'd wanted freedom, and it had been the only way. Rose—Pink had said so...And, anyway, once Pink made up her mind, there had been no choice.)
Here, now, Garnet adds on to Amethyst’s order: "It’s the rules."
The rules. (This is very not allowed.) She doesn’t want to. Not again…
She’s free, she reminds herself. She doesn't have to. Free, free, free…
(What is freedom?)
(In this moment, Amethyst and Garnet, with their orders and their rules, only look like Steven. If Steven himself had asked, with his rosy pink Gemstone, would she be able to refuse?)
But he didn't ask. So Pearl's decisions, her actions—they're all her own. She finds that she can roll her eyes, mutter dismissively: “Oh, please.”
To the others, she's sure, she looks like what humans call a buzzkill. Haughty. Neurotic. No fun. But she'll take it. This refusal—sometimes it's what autonomy looks like

A small part of Pearl was already regretting doing this, even though it was all she’d wanted for so long. Finally, she had a way to tell him, without telling him. But, now that it was actually here, now that everyone would know--because Steven could and would certainly tell them all---she wasn’t sure if she was prepared for the response.
How would everyone react? What would the others think?

Let’s never speak of this again. Pearl’s hands were placed over her mouth. No one can ever know.The final piece of the puzzle slid into place then. I can’t tell you. Pearl had meant it literally, it turned out. All this time, he had thought it was him, that she wouldn’t tell him because she thought he wasn’t ready, that he couldn’t handle it.
Pearl turned to him then, startling him when she spoke, “Sorry to make you come all this way.”
She held out the cell phone he’d been looking for, he took it on instinct. Steven didn’t know what to say. What could he say?
This Pearl didn’t seem to expect a reply anyway. Without another word, she shapeshifted into the form of Rose Quartz, just as he’d seen her in the previous layer. The flower in her hair fluttered to the ground, and he realized it was the same flower from the text.
Heart heavy, he watched her draw the curtain and leave, knowing what she was about to do.

“Explain,” the words were delivered through clenched teeth, Garnet clearly trying to hold herself together as best as she could, while trying to get more information. Confirmation. She wasn’t going to break down, yet. Not until she had all the facts.Pearl wondered if she should speak up now, if she could . Was she still bound, when the information was already out? Could she elaborate, explain, or would she be once against forced to keep her mouth shut, hands flying up instinctively despite all her best efforts to stop it.
In the end, she didn’t have to try. Steven slowly stood up, glancing once in her direction, eyes looking wide and sympathetic, before clouding over as he explained everything that had transpired, everything he’d seen in that fateful memory of that terrible day
.
Inevitably, as it always happened, Pearl relented, not out of compelled instinct to her diamond, but because it was Pink, it was Rose , who had asked of it.So, she had watched, as her Diamond created fake shards of herself, with such accuracy even she had flinched at the sight, and she’d accepted the flower she’d offered along with it, a reminder of what it was all for, the freedom that they would gain through their lie. She’d stood, unmoving, when Pink Diamond gave her final order, one that would come to haunt Pearl almost more than any other move in the whole terrible sequence of events that played out that day.
(Sometimes, in the long years after, but especially in the time when she’d gone and the order had stopped her more than ever, she wondered if Rose would have relented, if she would have undone it, if Pearl had asked it. But she never had, and they’d both buried that day so deep inside them, even Pearl had nearly forgotten until Steven had unearthed it all back out again--)
The moment that had struck her most, was the instant she’d shoved a giant sword straight through her Diamond’s physical form. Even though it was what had been asked of her, even though she knew it was little more than playacting, an instinctive part of Pearl protested painfully at the act of hurting her Diamond. More than her programming, she ached at hurting someone she loved

“Earth belonged to the Diamond known as Pink,” Rose’s voice lowered, “She wanted to suck the life out of this planet just like all of the others. But a group of us, who eventually became known as the Crystal Gems, couldn’t stand for this. So we fought, it was a hard war, with many casualties on both sides. But we fought because we cared about the Earth, because we wanted to save it ...And, eventually we won. That monster is gone and the Earth is free from her terrible reign now.”Sardonyx’s mind went blank. In an unnatural way, it wasn’t as though she’d let her mind clear out of any thoughts inside it, slowly reaching a state of tranquility. Nope, one moment she had thoughts and then the next her mind was blank, all her previous thoughts just—blip!—gone. It ripped Pearl and Garnet out of the fusion leaving them suspended—though not for long—a few feet off the ground, before they fell clumsily to the ground.
What was that? Garnet wondered to herself, she’d never had anything like that happen to her, or another fusion she was a part of before.
On the ground a few feet away sat Pearl, back to the other crystal Gems, both hands over her mouth and lips sealed shut against her will

"And how’s my Pearl doin’?”The comment was totally innocent, she knew - just Amethyst speaking in her usual atrocious slang. Pearl had gotten so used to it that the phrase didn’t even really register, but Steven grabbed her skirt and took a half-step in front of her, scowling.
“No! Mah Pearl. Mine. She mine!”
Amethyst just laughed it off, chalking up the comment to be another cute passing moment of Steven’s. Pearl, on the other hand...
At first, she couldn’t decide if she was supposed to be alarmed or terrified. What was he saying? Did he somehow… did he know? Maybe Rose’s memories were in there after all, slowing coming out as he aged. Could it be possible?
More troubling, why was she feeling proud? Shock, fear, worry - those all seemed to her rational reactions right now, but all she could feel was a surging rush of affection for the boy standing protectively in front of her. He had a hand half-raised like he was shielding her from Amethyst, a gesture she’d thrown up to protect Rose a thousand times over.
“Steven?” Pearl’s tone was oddly strained, so she tried to clear her throat. Steven peered upwards, his protective glare turning to something of guilt and worry.
A little calmer, she tried again with a soft smile. “Steven, why did you say that?”
Frowning, he looked at his shoes. “Umm… w-well, ‘cause, umm… you always call me ‘my Steven’... a-and I thought that’s what I was ‘pposed to say… was that wrong?”
Pearl didn’t know what she was expecting him to say, but it certainly wasn’t that. From behind him, Amethyst was eyeing the two skeptically, almost looking bored.
“P-Pearl! D-don’t cry!” Steven gasped, dropping his cup of ice cream and throwing himself forward to hug her. Automatically, Pearl’s hand shot out and caught it before it could hit the ground, but the rest of her stayed frozen in the unexpected embrace. When had she started crying?
“I-I’m s-s-sorry… I w-won’t… say it again!”
Eventually, the white gem wrapped her arms around the tiny boy and picked him up again, squeezing him tightly.
“No, Steven, no, it’s okay. Shh…” She spoke low, face pressing tenderly into his hair. “You can say it, if you want. I just… was surprised…”
A sniffling, red face gazed up at her. “Y-y-you’re… not mad a-at me?”
“Never, my silly little Steven,” she replied with a loving smile. He returned it slowly, the trust apparent in his shining eyes.
