“But hear me out, there’s always going to be someone who gets chosen. No matter how small your odds are, there are two outcomes: you get picked or you don’t. I got picked twice, so I’m here now. But instead of trying to calculate what my odds actually were - and they were supposed to be ‘in my favor’, let's not forget - it’s easier to just realize that I had two options. Fifty-fifty odds. See? Statistics mean absolutely nothing when you’re the one who’s playing the game.”

The Hunger Games are a very distant reality in the backwoods of District 7. Aspen Murdock lives in a one room house with seven siblings and never enough food on the table. Tesserae were nothing but a standard distribution of goods to impoverished homes that needed it the most. But suddenly, Aspen finds that she's been pre-selected to attend the District 7 reaping. Still, she figures the odds are in her favor. It's not until she's loaded onto a train bound for the Capitol itself that she begins to understand exactly what she's getting herself into.

The room is exactly the same as it was a week ago, same furniture and adornments, same eerily large interior. My previous resolve to prove Blight wrong about my hick history has evaporated completely. I strip off my ridiculous pink outfit and wrap myself in the blanket from the bed. Then, because I really am nothing but a feral kid from the woods, I open the sink cabinet and shut myself inside for the night. A reference from when blight assumed she'd probably sleep anywhere else but her bed, and aspen doing the opposite out of spite. After winning she just doesn't even care anymore.

Chapter 11 killed me. The talk of prostitution. Them crying while the night ended. Ugh.

“Is it true?” I gasp, a renewed layer of disturbance rippling through my system.

“Well I’m assuming he didn’t lie about anything. If he told you about my family, that’s all true.” She pauses, appraising me. “It’ll happen to you if you’re not careful.”

“It can’t,” I deny, garbling almost incoherently.

“It will!” she insists, face turning dark. “Matthew, June, Paul, Jobe, Rachel; my father, my mother, my brothers, my sister. That was just the start. Christina, Sarah, Ruth; my best friends. Not all at once, but over time. He gave me every opportunity to put out, but I couldn’t. I’d try again for a couple of days, but then we’d go back to the start. After the first few, it blurred together and stopped mattering. He only quit when he knew there was no life left for me, not a single lifeline. Then it was over. I came to live here, alone, and I continue to live here, alone, and I will always be alone because the second someone else matters he’ll take them too.”

For the first time, I watch as Johanna Mason cries in front of me. I can’t think of anything to say or to do that will convey even a fraction of the emotion I feel.

“But you’re different,” she hiccups and wipes the stream of snot from below her nose. “You’re this insane badass who didn’t care when I left you to rot in Capitol hands. You can do it.”

“I can’t.” I’m crying just as messily as her. “I was lying. I can’t do it.”

“Do you want that house full of kids to take bullets to the brain?” she screams herself hoarse. “That little boy will be buried six feet underground before his fifth birthday!”

I allow the echoes of her words to bathe in the air around us. The birds have fallen silent.

“I could kill myself,” I whisper it, just as the thought strikes me.

“Then Snow would steal your gorgeous twin instead, he’d be a hit in some of the bars downtown. There is nothing you can possibly do to stop this, the sooner you accept it, the better,” she whispers right back.

My chest aches and heaves, my head pounds in pain.

“What do I do now?” I ask. I don’t have the remotest clue of what my next steps should be.

“I think that you should let me walk you back to Blight’s house. He can answer a lot more questions than I can and he’s not going to scream at you until you cry.”

    Summary

Finnick Odair and Johanna Mason were always a desperate mistake, but Finnick can't bring himself to think of her as a mistake: their daughter.

Johanna Mason never looked at it before she gave it up; that little bundle.

Willow Whoknows doesn't know who her parents are but thinks her little fishhook token might be a clue.

Finnick searched every face in Four's schoolyard, every little kid in the Capitol's propos, looking for eyes that matched his own. But Willow Whoknows remained exactly that—unknown, unknowable, forever just out of reach.

Sometimes, on the darkest nights when sleep wouldn't come, he'd imagine a girl somewhere, wearing a seashell necklace with a fishhook charm, never knowing who had given her it.

“I was always the one to beat,” I tell him. “I’m sorry that you forgot.”

Eighteen-year-old Johanna Mason has what it takes to survive the Hunger Games, but she’s not going to let anyone know it. Least of all the audience, who she eyes with thinly veiled hatred. But to make it out of the arena in once piece, she’s going to have to put on the show of a lifetime.

    Summary

The stains wouldn’t come out. They never did, the dyes used in the factory were of the highest quality. Liv couldn’t remember the last time she’d seen the bare skin of her hands and forearms. They came in every colour- magenta, lilac, cerulean, emerald green, crimson, white, bright, sunny yellow. A stark contrast from the fabrics they used here in the district. Their clothes were muddy brown, grey, worn out black, unprocessed white cotton turned yellow from wear and washing. Those colours weren’t for them to have. They could make them, they could wear them on their skin, earned from hours of labour at the factories, but they could never own them.

There were seventy five Hunger Games in the history of Panem. One thousand eight hundred and two tributes, each with their own stories, their own experiences, their own fears and tragedies. Olivia is one of them, an orphan of District 8, textiles. The 72nd Hunger Games are about to start. Life has always been shitty, so how surprising could this be, really? But maybe she can find purpose along the way. That would be good, she hasn't had any in a long time.

“How did the date go?” Finnick asked, shifting to make space for Peeta who plunking down next to him, the couch springs groaning under the added weight.

“Terrible. She was way too hot.”

Finnick barked out a laugh, his head tipping back against the cushions. “How is that a bad thing?”

“It made me do dumb shit.” Peeta groaned, dragging a hand through his curls until they stood on end. His cheeks were flushed from either the walk back or the humiliation he was reliving. “I opened a door for her and as she walked through, then I thanked her.” His voice cracked on the last word. “She must think I’m such a dork.”

"Volunteering isn't why you should worry about me in there."

And I don’t mean worry about me, I mean worry about yourself. Because if it comes down to it. I need to get home to Prim.

"Do me a favour.” I say, hopping down from the ledge and straightening my back to loom over her,
“Stay outta my way in there. I don’t entirely mind you. Which is rare for me, so I’d rather not have to be the one to put you down.” Again, it comes out far easier than I’d like and I have to step past her and strut back towards the elevator to hide the grimace forming on my face. But it must land how I wanted it to because I hear her call back after me.

“Well, shit, that almost sounded like you like me.”

Currently a work in progress; actively being edited and added to - if numbers or scenes don't make sense, that's why.
Chapters are very short, more like scenes.
Don't get attached to anyone; remember it's the Hunger Games and most of them will die painfully.
All trigger warnings from the official Hunger Games series apply.
