Oliver hums. “Do you hate me, Alana?”
A beat passes. “Wow, you really don't fuck around, huh. Just straight to the point.”
“Yes.
Alana laughs again, bitterly. "Okay, kid. Okay. No, I don't hate you.”
"Really? Your open hostility towards me sends an entirely different message," Oliver says. "I don't hate you. I just hate what your being here means.” Oliver frowns, confused. She doesn't say anything else on it, but her gaze shifts past him.Oliver turns to follow it, and it lands on Finnick. He's inside the apartment, watching them intently through glass doors. He doesn’t flinch away when he gets caught. Instead some sort of pained look crosses his face just for a moment, then he walks out of sight.
Oliver Kawamoto made promise to stay alive after getting reaped during the 69th Hunger Games, and he always keeps his promises.
He will regret keeping this one.

But I did. Somehow, I did. They carried me out of that arena with blood under my nails and screams stitched into my spine. The Capitol call me a victor. I call myself what's left. The cameras don't show what happens when the lights go out. They don’t show the way I wake up clawing at my throat. Or how I stare at my reflection like it’s someone else wearing my skin. The only things that keep me here — really here — are Finnick’s hands in mine, my mother’s fading heartbeat, and the little white pills he brings in from the Capitol. They’re supposed to help. And they do. Sort of. But the memories don’t go away — they just wait. Wait for the night. For the silence. For the crack in my voice when I try to say I’m fine.
I’m not fine.

Effie Trinket knew that the districts didn't often do the things the Capitol did. In fact, the districts hardly ever did the things the Capitol did. But it honestly truly broke her heart to learn that the districts didn't celebrate Christmas.
Christmas was by far her favorite Capitol holiday. And while she knew that the districts hardly did holidays at all, it still made her sad to hear that they didn't have Christmas, in any of the districts. Not because it set them apart from the Capitol, and certainly not because it made them primitive or unworthy. But because it was just another stolen joy that the Capitol, that Effie's people, took away from them.
