She erupts in a gasp, whipping to face her roommate so fast that her little stool nearly topples over. “Elphaba Thropp, are you about to gossip with me? Whatever has gotten into you?” She waves the thought away and stands, ready to excitedly flounce around her roommate. “Oh, it doesn’t matter. This calls for a celebratiooon!”
“Do you know that everyone thinks we’re dating?”
Galinda freezes in her tracks. “Oh,” she says. “That one.”

Glinda Upland, surprise winner of the 68th annual Hunger Games at fifteen years old-and now, at seventeen, her mentor. The person who was supposed to guide Elphaba through the pre game festivities and look out for her while she was in the Arena. The person who had once been closer to her than anyone else in the world, now worse than a stranger.
Elphaba tried to stifle a sigh. She really didn’t stand a chance.
Or: Elphaba and Glinda are both District 12's surprise Victors. But Elphaba is just beginning to realize the Games don't end when she leaves the Arena...

The sudden friendship with Galinda and Fiyero pulled her sister back to her, as it was suddenly less disgustifying to be friends with her sister now that two of the most popular people in school were also there. And with Nessa came Boq (although Elphaba was not unaware that the Munchkin boy was there more to catch Galinda’s attention than for her sister).
The day that Doctor Dillamond was taken away, the day that she rescued the Lion Cub with Fiyero, was the first day she finally was able to look past his façade to see the unhappy man underneath. And knowing that there was a depth to him that wasn’t obvious to the casual observer? Well, that changed things. And Oz, did she feel horrible about that."
While waiting for Fiyero to come back for her after the "melting," Elphaba revisits relationships she has had over the years and lessons she has learned.
