Summary
An ablation study aims to determine the contribution of a component to an AI system by removing the component, and then analyzing the resultant performance of the system.
Deleting Caine was not the plan. And his absence led to a whole set of new problems, ranging from the destabilization of the Amazing Digital Circus to a more murderous AI trying to take control of the mainframe. Retrieving him was a matter of practicality. They might not trust him and were definitely wary of him, but his presence was their only way to survive.
Knowing that the humans that you love and desperately want to make happy fear and hate you (for admittedly good reasons) and only brought you back because they have no choice was not the best feeling for an AI never designed to handle emotions in the first place. It would be much better to only keep the parts that they need and discard the rest.

Summary
Complete and absolute deletion would mean the end of the circus. It still stood, even if torn. However, without a fully functional AI attached to its framework, it is bound to slowly fall apart.
The former ruling AI hopes, from the bottom of his nonexistent heart, that his dear humans may find a solution and worthy substitute... before the deletion timer hits zero.-----------
AKA: Cain ends up in the recycling bin. He won't be there for long, however. A computer is soon retrieved by the humans... For the better or worse. Files need to go back to their original location if restored. Some jails are worse than others, perhaps worse than deletion.
Aiming for character dissection, analysis, coping, hurting my blorbos, making time until I can watch the movie and producing hopium for a good (bittersweet?) ending.

“What did you do?” Jax asked.

Kinger mumbles an affirmative under his breath. The sound of scratching on paper grabs Caine's attention, only just noticing the notepad in the other's hand. He watches the pencil dance across the paper, slightly entranced by the movement, until it stops and Kinger's attention is back on him. "Alright. What's the last thing you remember?"
Nothingness. The absence of himself. A moment that never existed, yet he knows the time passed, so something has to be there. Even if it isn't. Even if he wasn't. He thinks this, and comes up with a response that makes sense with the context he has in his mind. He doesn't compute how it will come across when all he has to say is:
"Nothing."
OR:
Caine is dead. Then, he isn't. Not because the humans wanted to see him again, not because they felt bad, but because the circus couldn't survive without him. To top it all off, he was only brought back to begin with thanks to one teeny, tiny little condition:
He can no longer use his powers.

Even if it means doing things that actively take up too much RAM for him to handle, like leaving their favorite adventures open all the time or giving them all special abilities or letting them all customize their models, etc. This leads to… a very glitchy, exhausted, and ready-to-collapse Caine, and his only hope is that the others realize what they’re doing to him before it’s too late.
