Lawrence sat.
“I need a favor,” the Pope said. He didn’t sound tired, exactly. Just past the threshold of fatigue into some stranger, steadier state.
Lawrence waited.
“There’s a visitor,” the Pope went on. “He believes he’s here for an audience.”
Still, he didn’t look up. Just turned a page, signed again, then closed the folder and laid the pen down with the kind of care that made Lawrence nervous.
“Bellini can’t take the meeting. I won’t.”
A pause.
“You will.”
(In which Lawrence speaks on the Pope’s behalf, and learns that being heard can be its own kind of closeness.)

That was something he had meant to say in a moment of passion, some attempt at romanticizing the decidedly un-romantic circumstances of their past years together. He did not mean to say it now.

Percy’s late for dinner again. This isn’t uncommon - honestly, before they’d gotten together, Vex is pretty sure the only reason Percy ate regularly was that he would be dragged (down from his room, or up from his workshop as the case may be) to eat with them: left to his own devices his timekeeping goes out the window.
So- she knows to expect this. She’d known to expect this from before they’d gotten together - this is standard Percy behaviour, losing track of time. But… it’s one thing to know and another thing to experience. It’s one thing to know his terrible timekeeping but also to have the evidence of how readily he makes time for her and projects for her and for her worries. It’s one thing to be aware it might happen, it’s another for it to happen three days in a row and god but she wishes she could rely on him to be there.
There are days, especially recently, when she’d really like for him to be there.

What kind of toy?” Her hand teases up along his outer thigh, ghosting along the skin of his inner thigh. “A toy for you?” She inches closer, “...or a toy for me?”
Gulping, he lets his hand fall from her head and hair, sliding it down the expanse of her back that he can reach. “For you, my dear.” His fingertips massage into the softer flesh on either side of her spine, sliding slowly up, up, up to her shoulders. “For now, at least.”

Summary
In a way, Percy knows he deserves it, even if Vex treats him like usual—she is not her brother. Sometimes Vax has to actually talk to him; because that’s what fighting together means and, if he is talking with Vex, Percy knows that she notices the weird change in tone. She notices almost everything about her brother, and sometimes about Percy too when he says Percy like it hurts to pronounce it.
At first he tried a couple different approaches but he didn’t dare force Vax’s hand and, honestly, after some days, he has made peace with the idea that what they both had is over.
