He saw himself, sitting on this same stool, watching Sam wait month after month for Diane to return. When Diane would not return, Sam would drown his sorrows in willing women; he would nearly drown after the boat he purchased with the money he got by selling the house sank. And Diane would go off to some cabin in the woods and emerge with a novel ready to be published. Success and fame and wealth would be at her fingertips. And Frasier would still be at this damn bar.
“So,” Sam said to Diane, gentle and solemn while Frasier’s blood boiled. “Do you agree that we shouldn’t get married?”
Frasier leapt off his stool as abruptly if he’d been fired out of a cannon. “No!”
