Summary

Shadow sighs visibly and tries again, slower, ”Why did you stay?”
It takes a few seconds for Sonic to realize what he’s talking about. “Oh you mean that night- well dude, I couldn’t just leave you all by yourself! You seemed so- so-“
”So what?” Shadow demands.
Sonic flicks through the various things he could finish that sentence with, dismayed to find that most of them are mildly insulting. He settles on, “Alone. You seemed so alone. And I didn’t want you to be.”
They stand there for a long minute. Rain drips down Shadow’s face, turns him into one soaked gleaming part of the night. At last he nods. Sonic fights off the sense that he just passed some kind of test.

The three years since Sonic ran away have been long and exhausting, and there’s no end in sight, but there’s plenty of pretty views along the way and fascinating people to meet, and he’s loathe to complain when there’s folks who have it a whole lot worse. And yeah maybe it's not smart, making it his personal mission to figure this stranger out, but the guy stole his popsicle. Can you blame him?

Shadow yelled, spinning around and launching a doom spear out from his hand. It zoomed past the cobalt hedgehog that had come up behind him, dissipating into the ground but leaving a small cut on his cheek. Shadow's lungs heaved as his hand shook. His eyes met green and he felt his body relax without his permission.
“Dang Shads,” Sonic the Hedgehog let out an airy laugh as he wiped the blood from his cheek, “Did I catch you at a bad time? You haven’t tried to kill me like that since the war with the Dark Arms!”
______Shadow was more powerful than ever thanks to Doom's influence. But that power didn't come without its drawbacks. His body ached and burned with pain. His body was tired, his mind was exhausted. He had been trying to process his grief with no prevail.
Sonics harassment of his personal bubble didn't help either.
But-
But Shadow couldn't find the words to send the hedgehog away. Maria was happy Shadow had made a friend after all. She would tease him if she discovered that, deep down, Shadow wished that friendship was something more.

Yelling.
It’s the first noise that filters through two black, twitching ears. Soldiers are calling for unintelligible things, their voices drowned by the mindless crackle of fire still eating away at whatever source of fuel it'd found.
Shadow's gloved fists shake. With anger or fear, he knows not of which the loss of control over his limbs stem from. He can only stare, eyes wide as his fingers carefully brush over soft, blonde strands of hair he'd braided so many times before. The same strands he'd always been lightly scolded at for rolling onto between movies.
It wavers at the first gust of wind that blows from the base's newly opened doors. At the first sign that- despite what Shadow had convinced himself -the world had not stopped the moment maroon eyes had laid upon her limp body.
"Maria?"Through all the panic and confusion, Shadow can only focus on one thing. Maria isn't waking up.
