Madeleine is yanked back, but that isn't quite right, because nothing's physically pulling him back- it's more of the initial shock of a force roaming around your chest, until it finds the threads of your soul, collecting all of the fragments one by one, and then yanking them out as one would pull threads through a weave. Except he doesn't think weaving is supposed to feel like someone twisting your intestines and pulling them until they rip apart at the seams.

"It's not grief." Desire chuckles, trying to keep their composure, a wall raising. Avoidance.
"Not yet." Despair responds.
