“What’s two plus two?”
The question evades me. There’s an uncomfortable scratch in my throat that I can’t quite wrap my head around. Regardless of the discomfort, my chest feels light. Unburdened. Weightless. My brain feels quiet. Somehow, that feels new.
Even as I’m gathering that something is definitely off here, I know for sure that “quiet” has never been a word I’ve used to describe my brain. Why is that? I have no idea.
As my body continues to rifle through each foreign sensation, there is one thing on my mind that somehow breaks through to consciousness. The lightness in my chest is wrong. The silence in my mind is wrong.
And like a prodigal son returning home, the heaviness settles in. The tears spring to my eyes and the noise returns to my brain, feeling nothing short of familiar.
"What's two plus two?"
“Fffour,” I finally grind out, wondering if the labored exhale would relieve me of my burden.
“Correct,” the computer chimes.
I know two plus two is four.
But not why my heart feels like it’s shattering inside my chest. -

The sun filtered through the window behind her just right so that she seemed to glow and from the end of the hall, Ryland traced the blue of her eyes down the bridge of her nose to her soft pink lips and knew he was utterly fucked.
(He will regret deeply with all his heart, months later, not cherishing this time, when mere social interactions were the most pressing issue on his mind.)

That overthinking usually led to some places where story-making ultimately got a hold of his impulses, and he put his foot in his mouth. He had put his foot in his mouth plenty of times around Eva Stratt, and she still held him in some kind esteem. She made him feel something he hadn't felt very often in his life. It was how he felt about the Astrophage and Project Hail Mary: like having a direction, as if his internal compass were waking up and showing him his North Star.
That scared him because it always prefaced the destruction of something that gave Ryland Grace a purpose.
Eva Stratt gave him a purpose. And he overthought himself into a position that truly must be the worst of all.
He kissed her. But she kissed him back.
