College was great.
It was great because
a) Jughead got to know Archie
and
b) because he didn’t have to be home.
However, college also had semester breaks and while Archie was able to go on a sunny vacation with his mother, Jughead was stuck with returning to Riverdale and his family.

"No, to both of you" Betty clarified, glaring at her best friends upon seeing where they were pointing at.
"You can't blame them" Kevin mumbled, watching the boy at the locker as well.
"Exactly. Why can't we?" Veronica asked.
"Oh my God. Do you want him?"
"What? No. That's-" She sighed "No, that's Jughead, my little brother. Anyways, there is this rule under friends that we don't date our siblings"
"Because we don't have any" Veronica said.
"Or because they're four" Archie added.
"Besides, we never established that rule, and we definitely won't now. I'm so going over there"
"Kev, no, wait-" Betty began, her eyes wide in panic, but he was already moving and while he was at it, Archie and Veronica hurried to catch up with him.
"Guys, seriously?" Betty whined, staying back while her stepbrother was swarmed by her friends.
She was in for a ride, wasn't she?

“Hey Red” FP smiled, standing on the Andrews’ front porch. It threw Archie off a bit, not expecting to see the person he was currently helping to hide his boyfriend from.
“What can I do for you, Mr. Jones?” Archie asked, trying to keep himself from coming off as suspicious.
“Is Jughead here? He left in the middle of the night the other night and I haven't seen him since, I'm worried about him.”
Archie thought for a moment, contemplating whether or not he should tell FP. On one hand, he wanted to respect the fact that Jughead wanted to keep this from his dad. On the other hand, FP was an ex gang leader who was fiercely protective of his eldest, and only, son. A quick, thoughtless glance over his shoulder at Jughead sleeping on the couch no doubt gave away the fact that Jughead was there, and there was no way he'd be able to deny it now.
“Uhh, yeah he's uh… he's here, Mr. Jones. Before you come in, there's something I need to tell you first…”

Summary
Jughead just got his father back, as a real father. FP was always in Riverdale but he had lost himself in liquor for two years. With his mother and sister gone, he was the only family left.
FP got back on track but not even four months later, Jughead had to call an ambulance because he found his father passed out in the kitchen — and that one not because of alcohol but because of liver failure.
How could he say goodbye to his father when he just got him back?

“Mom?” Betty calls into the house, peering around the corner.
No response.
As she makes her way into the kitchen and dining room area, Betty sees the door to the backyard has been haphazardly left wide open. The curtain attached to the inward side blows in the evening breeze.
Before doing much else, Betty secures that door, shutting it and locking it. When she’s finished she faces the kitchen.
It’s vacant… except for something unfamiliar left on the kitchen island.
Betty walks over, her head tilting in concern. There’s a piece of paper taped to a rock and… blood pooled under it. She rips the note off of the stone, still confused.
"Your mother says hi."
