      Hal practically lunges forward and latches onto Bruce’s shoulder. “Good God, Bruce. Don’t ever apologize for something like that. It… It was honestly nice to come home to a text like that.”

      Bruce refuses to make eye contact, but the way that he doesn’t try to pull out of Hal’s grasp is telling. Hal sighs, exasperated. “For fuck’s sake, Bruce. If you wanted a hug, you could’ve just said something.”

      Bruce’s eyes widen comically fast, but Hal doesn’t give him any more time to react before he latches onto Bruce in the best bear hug he could possibly give. Less than a second later, Bruce returns the embrace with just as much – if not more – strength.

      “I’ve already told you, you big idiot,” Hal mutters. “You’re my damn brother, you got it?”

      Bruce lets out a shaky breath. “…Yeah. Brothers. You… you’ve got my back.”

      Hal pulls back and knocks him on the shoulder. “And you’ve got mine.”

      Hal steps back fully and offers a cocky salute and wink, activating his ring to fly home. “Until next time, Spooky.”

      The look that Bruce gives him isn’t quite a smile, but Hal can see the contentment written in his stance. “Good night, Hal.”

    Clark gets up and moves round to stand in front of him. The hand doesn’t land on his shoulder. There are no words of condemnation or reproach. Instead he feels long, warm fingers curl around his bicep. They don’t squeeze but he feels the touch like a shackle. It… he doesn’t know if it’s good or not.

    Hal glanced at his hand, knowing fully well this was an act, a charade they could drop as soon as it was over and they were home. Until then, he just had to play his part. “Don’t patronize me,” he insisted, slapping his hand away harshly. “I’m not a child.”

    “Well, you certainly act like one,” he snapped, stepping back to exit his personal space and put some distance between them. “My kids have better survival skills than you do.”

    Hal scoffed. “I doubt it, considering you’ve gotten half of them killed and the other half have tried to kill you,” he retorted sharply, the words feeling heavy and bitter on his tongue.
