Summary
Kaisa’s eyes were downcast, and her sweater shuddered with little breaths, like she was about to confess to Tildy all over again. She pressed one hand to her chest, fingers splayed out. “I’m the one who needs to apologise, not you.”
“What do you mean?” Frida asked softly, an awkward mix of emotions rising up inside. Kaisa still didn’t look up, but she did take a half-step forwards, one hand reaching up across her body to rub the opposite arm.
“You came to me for help,” she began, a definite shame in her quiet words. “Hilda needed you, and you needed me, and, and I…” she shook her head, and for a second, hearing the warning-damp in her voice, Frida was afraid the young woman might start crying. “I turned my back on her, and you, and I tried to get you to do the same.”
It takes a week after the Night of Trolls, before Frida sees Kaisa again.

But looking back, all she could think of was the awful evening when Trylla had refused to change her back, and the horrible texture of her false skin, and the cold, lonely, homesick nights. Even the good memories were tainted, now that she knew they were born from a lie, and that while she she’d been running and roaring and relishing her strength, her mum had been badly hurt and probably crying, missing her stolen child.
It's been a week since the Night of Trolls, and Hilda still doesn't feel safe; she gets scared whenever she's away from her mum, and she can't stop worrying about being taken away again. One sleepless night, it all comes spilling out.
