It's easy to assume one is an only child when one's mother made a damn good attempt to get at least one of her babies out of harm's way. It's also easy to assume that when the other parent is actually a lousy scientist, and your mother was pregnant in a town that doesn't even have a midwife on hand to know there's two on the way, not just one.
(It helps so, so much when your unexpected twin is immediately ride-or-die for you, and colludes with your best friend to murder your shitty surviving parent before they can feed you to an alien monster.)

Summary: When Sephiroth ends up changed due to an experiment done by Hojo, a wildlife expert is needed to stop him from going on more rampages. Luckily, Zack knows a country bumpkin like himself that is very good with dealing with wild creatures. Even spiders! Zack figures that Sephiroth has wolf traits, and there was no way Spiky would remain angry if he set things up so that Cloud could meet his hero! Zack just has no idea that Tseng was going to put the two on lock down for safety reasons.
Or: Cloud very much does not want to spend time with his hero, Zack unknowingly acts as a relationship counselor, and Sephiroth blames these instincts for wanting scritches and cuddles. They 'socially awkward' together in just the right way that they get along where they normally would not get along with anyone. Zack believes the two are too sweet and innocent for dating and refuses to believe they are falling in love, and Kunsel is always right except the one time he isn't.

Then, through bleary newborn eyes, he saw her. His mother. Alive.
Well. Holding him with warmth and exhaustion.
That alone was enough to shock him into silence.
And then she turned and handed him over to a man she lovingly called Dear. Cloud braced himself. Surely, it would be someone kind. Someone he could trust. Someone who wouldn’t ruin his entire existence.
Instead, he found himself cradled in the arms of Fucking President Shinra.
