Tim feels the separation immediately and acutely. He can’t quite recall the exact feeling of losing his packmates in the past, but he knows the grief was immense, the longing unbearable. It was what drew him to the League in the first place. Having a mate now, Tim isn’t sure he’d survive the loss of him. It’s a strange contradiction to be both devoid of love as an emotion and to know his love is great enough to destroy him.
They’re an irregularity, the pair of them. Two birds who shouldn’t be alive, let alone in the same place at the same time, and yet…
And yet they defy the odds. For Jason’s body to have accepted his claim at all is a statistical anomaly. It’s the same reason Ra’s never attempted to force a claim on Tim: if it had been rejected (almost certainly) the offended omega would maul the perpetrator. And even if Ra’s had survived that confrontation – or, more likely, been brought back from it – Tim’s body would remember the slight. His thyroid would start producing a rejection hormone to exude the foulest, most hostile scent to ward away the unwanted suitor. All of the bats notice it, see the way that he eyes the shadows as if they might attack, hear the snipe in his too sharp voice, know of just how withdrawn from them he had become. They all notice it, but none of them speak of it, not to Tim at least.
Jason never really had been too good at following rules though, not unspoken ones, and especially not ones made since his own return to Gotham a handful of years earlier. Curiosity is a powerful motivator after all.—-
Or: Tim is bitter and when Jason decides to press, he decides to express his emotions through sparring, something that Jason is all too happy to agree too.

Summary
Bruce used to observe Dia de Muertos at Jason's grave. When Jason came back, he stopped. For some reason, that bothered Tim, so he took the tradition upon himself. Then Jason showed up and asked what Tim thought he was doing.
Red Hood was staring, impossible to read. Jason was so expressive that sometimes body language was enough with him (“incandescent with rage” was usually pretty clear,) but the helmet did a great job of erasing nuance. Tim had no idea what he was thinking.
Lucky, then, that he reached up to unlatch the hood and slid it off, tucking it under his arm and revealing a mocking smirk. “Aw, did you bring me flowers, Replacement?” he asked. “How cute.”

Summary
The start up systems check cataloged a great deal of damage, which Tim idly recorded for later examination when he actually had the capacity to do something about it.
That was, until he started noticing some strange terms. Things like “stasis disengaged,” “life support at 24% capacity,” and “sustained significant damage to remaining organic components.”
It took until the automatic processes neared the completion of their assessment, declaring an “unacceptable resource drain,” and concluding that it would “isolate and purge all unnecessary organics,” that Tim realized just what he was looking at. This wasn’t some empty droid that he could assimilate into his network. This was a cyborg, one who’d apparently been buried and forgotten and had to shut themself almost entirely down in order to preserve power and save their own life.
“No,” croaked a weak voice, and Tim snapped to attention. This was a person, and their own programming had just decided that all of the pieces that made them them were unnecessary. They were about to die, right in front of him, and it would be all Tim’s fault.

He just…couldn’t take it when he saw Tim like that. Jason had panicked when he first saw him, thinking he was too late. He’d cut Tim down quickly, cradling him as gently as he could. Tears of relief had streamed freely down his face when he’d felt Tim’s breath against his cheek. He didn’t have near enough gauze on him to cover even a third of the gashes Tim had sustained.
