Summary
It wasn’t as if Davey consciously forgot how to act like a proper, respectable member of society. He had just spent so much time around the newsies that their habits and way of speaking had been so heavily ingrained into his mind by the time he returned to school.
So, no, Davey hadn’t lost his manners or the correct way of speaking. It just occasionally slipped his mind that he wasn’t supposed to attempt to spit shake when speaking with a teacher or unintentionally offend a classmate with a nickname that escaped his mouth before he could reign it back in.
(Or: 5 times Davey forgot to not act like a newsie at school + 1 time he didn't need to.)

Dad goes back to work and we go back to school
It was something Davey-- David had said to his little brother Les when they had first started working with the Manhattan newsboys. Something to remind both of them of their responsibilities.
That was last year. Now a new school year was about to begin.
David gripped Les' shoulder on their way to the school building.
"We don't have to go!" Les cried for what must have been the 12th time in the past half hour alone, tugging at the collar of his uniform. "Jack would let us hide!"
David sighed. "We can't hide at the lodge, Les," he explained, looking around and thanking the Father that no newsie was on their street. He didn't think he could handle seeing the disappointment in any of their eyes. "We just can't."
No matter how hard David tried, Les wasn't having it. "But why!?"
David was trying to answer that for himself too.

Maybe he can get it covered up.
Most tattoo shops get a little iffy about covering soulmate marks, but if Jack pays an extra fee under the table… it might work, right? He can go to a shady shop and get a shitty coverup job and everything will be fine. At least that will be a decision he’s able to control. A decision that isn’t written in the stars.

The folks said to be careful. Mama thought it was dangerous, having their names tied to political commentary like that. Pop said so long as Davey’s schoolwork didn’t suffer, he was allowed to pick up extra work however he liked.
Sarah said it wasn’t exactly like Davey had been forced into it, and of course he could bow out if he wanted, but since when did he back down from following Jack Kelly anywhere?
Les said it made sense—they’d made good partners leading the strike and selling papes, of course they’d partner up in this “political cartoon” thing, too.
Katherine said it was only a matter of time, that Jack had always been better with pictures than words; that he may have been the face of the strike, but David Jacobs was the Mouth.

In the summer of 1899 Jack Kelly leads a strike against a newspaper tycoon and wins. Following the strike, he moves west to Santa Fe and buys a cowboy hat in a train station. He does everything in his power to hide his Manhattan accent, to disguise the fact that the East still fit over his shoulders like a well-worn coat and the West fit him like a pair of boots that were too small.
At twenty-two Jack runs a strike into the ground and has his face plastered on every street corner of Santa Fe. Now he’s all out of land to run west to. The dream is dried up.
In the summer of 1904 Jack Kelly goes home.
