The quiet tones and David and Sarah are white noise to Les’s sleep, and he’s not quite sure why they sound so hushed, so angry, so secretive, but he’s not going to give it much thought right now.

Jack looks at David and for just a moment David sees regret on his face. Or maybe he just wants to see that, he can’t say anymore.

    It’s at that moment that Jack feels his heart break.

    David is the perfect son, ask any of his teachers. He's got the perfect life planned out, go to college, marry a nice Jewish girl, and settle down with some kids. But when he moves to a new school, he realizes his crush for Jack Kelly, and all that crumbles. Try as he might, he can't deny his feelings, and the tension they make.
    Jack has it all, he is the star quarterback and could get any girl he wants. But when he meets the new kids, he realizes it's not any girl he wants. Struggling with his foster life and new emotions, he starts to slip form his pedestal.
    When the school field trip puts them together together is a room, tensions are high all week. But right before they leave, a massive snow storm hits, trapping them inside.

    Aka: David is gay, but is religious and can't stand Jack. Jack is Bi and got a crap life he can't escape from, on top of loathing David and crushing on him. They get stuck in a hotel for a couple of days and maybe work it out.

    The thought slapped him across the face, totally out of nowhere. Jack wasn’t really doing anything special— he was just reclined in David’s bed with his dinner on his lap, and he had a few chip crumbs on his thighs. He didn’t look any prettier than usual. He was just being Jack, staring off at the posters on the adjacent wall, probably thinking about the color composition or some artsy thing like that.

    And David was in love with him.

    With Jack. David was in love with Jack Kelly, and maybe he’d been in love with Jack Kelly for years and was just now realizing it, because of a stupid plate of quesadillas and the stupid way Jack said ‘made sure it was kosher, too’ because Jack cared about him and remembered the little things and holy shit, David was so fucking in love.

    "Racetrack Higgins likes what he's got. It's certainly not a castle but the Lodging House is a bed and food. He gets to spend most days at the races selling papes and watching the horses. He has Jack and Crutchie and the rest of the ’Hattan boys as family and he's got a Brooklyn boy, too, for back up when he needs it. The strike comes around and it fires him up even when it scares him.

    So yeah, Race knows how he feels about the strike. It's what the strike brought along with it- or rather, who- that he's not as sure about. Race doesn't blame Davey for the strike but that doesn't mean he likes him."

    In the year and a half after the strike, a lot changes. An exploration of Race's feelings towards Davey as Race gradually takes over Jack's responsibilities at the lodging house.

    Jack needs new boots. This is what he thinks as a puddle of water seeps out of them with each step into the Bronx lodging house. He bought these ones two years ago and now they just barely fit his feet. He must have had one last growth spurt in the past years since he saved up to buy them.

    Considering how rough this past winter was, they had definitely withered more. The steel toe cap lifted up from the sole every time he took a step.

New relationships toss David and Jack's relationship into turmoil, and David finds that the consequences of acting before thinking can be unfortunately extreme.

    It was an illness that could've been avoided easily, if David would've just guarded his heart more closely. Still, he found himself hacking up the contents of his aching lungs in an uncomfortably cramped alleyway with thoughts of Jack Kelly clouding his head, and he realized that there really wasn't any coming back from this. He'd made a mistake and his life was totally and completely ruined over a boy who'd never spare him a second glance.

    It was almost laughable, how much David loved Jack. He was a pathetic mess over the boy, with tiny blue flower petals stuck to his lips and chin, and visions of deep brown eyes swimming through his mind. David was lovelorn. Really and truly lovesick.

    It was an unfortunate series of events that moved the Jacobs family from Ohio to New York, but it came with a pay rise for Mayer, a new job for Esther, and a new school for their three children. All three had been struggling at their previous school, bullied for being Jewish, and Esther had high hopes that they would get on better in a state with many more Jewish people around.

    Davey and Sarah were fifteen, Les was twelve and unknown to their parents, they were all relieved to be moving to New York- or, back to New York, considering they all had memories of living there before. Sarah called it her past life, Davey just called them memories, without giving it a name that had such huge connotations as Sarah’s did. Les didn’t call it anything, because he was twelve and not yet fully aware of the fact that it set them apart from everyone else.

    “It’s called ‘The World’,” Esther was explaining to Sarah as Davey came down the stairs. He still wasn’t used to having a house with two floors, or a room to himself, despite it having been nearly a week since they had moved in.

He was afraid of the Spider. And the Refuge. And how it would break his boys if they were taken. How it was probably breaking Crutchie now.

    He was afraid he would break, if the blows didn’t stop soon.

    Maybe that’s why he took the deal.

    Jack just knew, deep in his chest, that Davey wasn't telling him something. He was a bad liar to begin with, but the shifty glances and hasty exits had almost grown to be too much as of late. There was something happening and Jack was ridiculously out of the loop, which was beyond frustrating. Wasn't he supposed to be in the loop? Weren't he and Dave supposed to be best friends, or selling partners or co-presidents or whatever? He was tired of trying to catch that anxious green gaze, tired of chasing after answers.

    What in the world could've been bothering Davey enough to push him to this level of silence? Jack was bound and determined to get to the bottom of it, even if it meant pushing his other priorities aside.
