Summary
Jack Kelly was afraid of a lot of things.
He was afraid that winter would come early, sending a chill through the lodge that would spread illness and hunger. He was afraid he and Racetrack wouldn’t be able to get enough gloves and hats and scarves and boots to keep the boys warm. He was afraid he would never get away to Santa Fe and its vast, open spaces. He was afraid of the Spider. And the Refuge. And how it would break his boys if they were taken. How it was probably breaking Crutchie now.
He was afraid he would break, if the blows didn’t stop soon.
Maybe that’s why he took the deal.
In which Davey learns why Jack took Pulitzer's deal, and what he had to endure in the meantime.

Summary
Jack just knew, deep in his chest, that Davey wasn't telling him something. He was a bad liar to begin with, but the shifty glances and hasty exits had almost grown to be too much as of late. There was something happening and Jack was ridiculously out of the loop, which was beyond frustrating. Wasn't he supposed to be in the loop? Weren't he and Dave supposed to be best friends, or selling partners or co-presidents or whatever? He was tired of trying to catch that anxious green gaze, tired of chasing after answers.
What in the world could've been bothering Davey enough to push him to this level of silence? Jack was bound and determined to get to the bottom of it, even if it meant pushing his other priorities aside.

“Sorry. I just-” He sighed, bouncing slightly on his heels, “You lied,” he pointed out.
Crutchie pinched the bridge of his nose. “And I formally apologize for that Davey, now can I help you with something or would you like to get on to the evening edition.”

“...hello.” David studies him, because this is not what he was promised by his books. No cloak. No skeletal hands. No hollow eyes. Just a boy roughly his age with tanned skin, warm eyes, and an outfit that looks like a cowboy and a 19th-century newsboy got into a fistfight and both lost: red bandana, odd cap, scuffed boots, and a satchel slung low on one hip. “I’m David.”
Or, Davey's dead and his reaper has no fashion sense.

In the aftermath of the rally, Jack and Davey vanish.
Convinced that their leaders abandoned them, the Newsies do their best to carry on with the strike, but something isn't quite right.
In truth, Jack and Davey are being held in the Refuge, and Snyder is tasked with extracting the information necessary to stop the strike once and for all.
Don’t forget, Pulitzer once vowed that he would break Jack Kelly, and he intends to keep his promise.This would be the beginning of the end.

David 'Davey' Jacobs had never been a confident person, and he never liked the thought of touching others or being intimate with any other person. He'd never look at women, never think about that part of human nature, nor has he ever wanted to.
When he overhears the other Newsies, and his little brother, discussing his repulsive nature towards women, he breaks down. And only one person can console him and make him see that - actually - he is perfectly natural and not at all "disgusting".
And, of course, that person is his Jack Kelly.

The Jacobs’ apartment is quiet, and that quiet might as well encompass the whole world for all David knows, for all David cares… the illusion is only fractured by the soft sounds of Jack. The rubbing of fabric and the wrinkle of sleeves as he works carefully on his buttons. The brush of leather as Jack pulls his suspenders over his shoulders. But these sounds too are quiet, and almost soothing in a way. They only reinforce David’s almost subconscious conviction that now was a time for sleeping. David could feel himself giving in to that feeling, his body slowly slipping into a dormant state again… of course Jack would come and disrupt everything.
