Charlie lingers in the locker room long after all the other boys have left, almost as if he doesn’t want any of them to see where he’s going, and that more than anything convinces Nick that he’s got to do something to find out what’s wrong. So when Nick leaves the locker room, he turns a corner and then hovers there, waiting to see which direction Charlie goes.
He’s not sure what he’s expecting—maybe that Charlie’s sneaking off to see Ben again? But Charlie doesn’t meet up with Ben. He doesn’t meet up with anyone. Instead, he ducks into a broom cupboard and emerges five minutes later in pajamas with a rucksack slung over his shoulders and what looks like a sleeping bag tucked under his arm.
Nick comes out from around the corner. “Charlie? What are you doing?”

Nick and Charlie did not grow up in the same town or even the same country. They grew up worlds apart, but they had two things in common. They were both Mormon and queer. They meet on their Mormon missions in the late 1990's Northern England. This story explores their lives over several decades as they navigate their faith and queer identities. Jumping between time periods, the story lines are gradually revealed as Nick and Charlie continue to learn about themselves and those around them.

Nick rested his forehead against Charlie’s, gently bumping their noses together. Charlie moved his hand between their chests and quickly snapped his fingers, his face appearing out of the darkness, cast in a flickering, golden glow. Nick glanced down in surprise to see a tiny flame dancing around in Charlie’s palm.
“Besides Tori, you’re the only other person in this world that I trust with my life. I trust that when we’re together, that you’ll keep me safe. So far, you’ve done nothing to prove me wrong. I wanted to tell you about this, I didn’t because… the last person that found out I had magic… it didn’t end well.”
“Your parents.” He said quietly, watching as the flame wove its way through Charlie’s fingers as they flexed. “They found out about your magic, didn’t they?”
“Sort of,” Charlie admitted, “Mum found out that Tori had magic, and you kind of know what happened after that. But, I remember just being so upset, and everything was coming to a head, so I made her rosary explode. And then we were running.”

I really liked this one! The pacing (hah! running pun) was good and I liked the marathon training as a narrative device. The only thing that could have made it deeper for me is if someone had hit a wall before the actual race. They had someone recovering from an injury which isn’t quite the same. But I loved it!

Summary
Charlie has no need to turn back the clock nearly a decade.But when he receives an email from a charity shop worker who's come into possession of a letter intended for him when he was still a teenager, he can't help but wonder if he should rekindle a connection with the estranged ex who sent it. All the while, he grapples with a longstanding belief that he's not good enough, yet, to deserve what he wants.
While he awaits Nick's response, he spends a couple of hours in the world of a woman mourning the disappearance of her husband. The book isn't one Charlie would usually pick, but he's pulled in by the portrayal of love's evolution, how it can change shape to fit a new vessel but still be as deep and rewarding the second time around as it was the first.
He closes it after the woman meets her long-lost husband for the first time in years, shaken by the progression of her thoughts as she reckoned with the realisation that she had betrayed not only him but herself in his absence. He doesn't have the mental fortitude to consume another quarter of the novel.
Not now. Not when he pulls out his phone and sees nothing worth reading on his screen.
