Six months, two weeks, and three days ago, Malcolm’s father was murdered. Six months, two weeks, and two days ago he saw his baby brother for the last time, as they went their separate ways. (Donalbain had said it was safer that way. Why had Malcolm believed him? He was the older one, if he’d ordered Donalbain to stay by his side…)
Six months and a week ago, Donalbain got on a ship bound for Ireland. Six months and two days ago, the men Macbeth hired caught Donalbain at the port, and sent him back to the mad thane in chains.
And Malcolm hadn’t even known. He’d been away in England, fretting and planning and doubting while his baby brother was tortured.
Mcduff told him not to blame himself. Malcolm usually trusted his friend’s judgment, but on this he didn’t think he could.

There is no sunrise at Scone the morning of the ceremony. The clouds loom over the muddy hillside, dark as the preceding night and prophesying rain. Malcolm tries to fool himself into believing the sky will clear before evening. Is this not the calm after the storm? Where are the rays of light breaking through that mass of gray? Where are the rainbows? There is no fooling himself any longer. This, he supposes, is an eternal tempest, a divine punishment or a reflection of the nation’s aching heart.
Or, it rains on Malcolm's coronation day.
