Ellie thinks she always knew that Joel was lying, from the second she woke up in that car and he started talking. In the haze of anesthesia and confusion and wondering where her clothes were, she didn’t interrogate it immediately, but it didn’t make sense. Raiders. Marlene. The last she remembers is them telling her they were putting her to sleep for some tests, and then she wakes up in a car in nothing but a hospital gown and with a version of Joel that looks more disturbed than usual. She tries to process it, tries to think of why he’d lie.
She doesn’t come up with a good reason, so she asks him to swear and he does. He’s never sworn anything to her before, not really, and it figures the first time he does is a lie. But it catches up to them eventually, and what starts with making a life in Jackson that begins with home repairs ends with a fracture beyond salvaging.
“My life could’ve mattered,” she spits out, when on a Tuesday a kid gets bit and gets a quick death on patrol and he finally cracks and tells her. “And you took that from me.”
“Your life matters now,” is what he says softly, because he doesn’t remotely care to get it.
