Sunday dinners just sort of happen to Ellie without her even noticing the pattern. It starts their first Sunday in Jackson, just one week in, and by the time the weather warms up, a month has gone by and Ellie’s eaten at Tommy and Maria’s house every week. Maria is about ready to pop and Tommy keeps badgering her to sit down while he finishes cooking. They’re bickering with two big dumb grins on their faces when Ellie turns to Joel and asks, “Why do you guys do this every week? Don’t you get tired of it?”
Joel pauses. “It’s a family tradition,” he says, musing, like he’s never considered it before. “Growin’ up, Tom and I ate every damn meal together. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Our mama would cook, so we’d do the dishes and set the table and all. So, food is - it’s real important to the family. You sit together for meals ‘cause some days it’d be the only time you made time for each other. When things get busy, you forget what’s important. You eat together, because you love each other.”

Ellie had stopped screaming. She stared down at her gory work, still hyperventilating, before letting her blood-covered hands slip away from the handle as she struggled to her feet.
Outside.
Door.
Escape.
Ellie turned with such unsteadiness that she almost tumbled over. Her breath was still struggling in and out of her broken lungs, both from the panic as well as the smoke, and her entire body was still shaking. Shuddered, terrified whimpers fell from her lips with each breath, though when she made it outside, they were hidden under the howling of the wind.
Cold.
Freezing.
Hurts.
Everything was white and covered in snow. The surrounding landscape was completely featureless. Ellie didn’t have any room left in her mind to bother trying to figure out where the fuck she was, she just knew that she had to get away from the burning hell behind her.
And then someone grabbed Ellie’s hand.
And she screamed for her fucking life.
TLDR/ Ellie's journey throughout their year on the road told through her panic attacks, from Sam's death, to after David, to Jackson. This also explores her trauma with F.E.D.R.A as well as everything else after they arrive in Jackson.

But Joel knew something was wrong with him when only he could drop those bodies from the trucks into the fire pit as if it were a sack of sand. No matter how big or small. Something he didn’t have the guts to do 20 years ago. Besides, the work wasn’t half as bad. Keeping guard in local area’s and rarely having to put someone down, besides infected of course. In the world they lived in it was considered a luxury.
Only thing not so nice?
Having to eat in the same cafeteria as those God-forsaken kids FEDRA kept around to build into soldiers. It was a new program FEDRA set up a few weeks ago. The adult soldiers would have lunch with the kids. The project was meant to show the kids what it would mean to be disciplined and grow into a respectful officer one day. Of course, the reality of that wasn’t so black and white.

She’s embarrassed by how sharp the stab of betrayal she feels is. God. She should know better by now. She’s too old to fall for this shit.
“You understand me?” He asks, face still as open and unbothered as it’s ever been. Why wouldn’t it be, after all? He’s done his job, keeping kids like her in line, reminding them that they’re here as a privilege, not a right.
She grits her teeth against what wants to come out.
“Yes, sir,” she says tightly.
If she has her way, she knows that she will never set foot in this office again.

A stupid soccer game is all it takes to unravel the jealousy Ellie has been concealing since she learnt about Sarah. Spiraling with uncertainty of where she stands with Joel, Ellie falls back on coping mechanisms from her FEDRA days - her support system scramble to fix it;
She wants to push him; to shove, to kick, to spit, to scream, to writhe on the floor. Her hungry, greedy hands that latch desperately onto kindness and always scramble for more, more, more – she wants to use them to tear her insides out as messily as she can; blood spilling out, staining the wood, flesh getting lodged in between his floorboards, damning the entire house, she wants to hold up the rotting flesh to Joel and make him look at the ugly that is rooted at the core of her.
Maybe that’ll finally be his breaking point. Maybe he’ll finally give up this little act that he cares about her.
Observing her, Joel’s face flicks through several different emotions before settling on one that sickeningly looks close to pity.
“Don’t fucking look at me like that.” She snaps.
“I’m not–” He sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose and screwing his eyes shut in exasperation, “will you just sit, Ellie, for god’s sake. Please?”
