Summary
For a brief moment, Joel almost laughs, a dark, angry laugh at the universe that he has suspected for years has been trying to take his youngest from him. Premature birth, slow to gain weight, a heart murmur, her mother’s wayward weekend, two cases of pneumonia, and a collection of broken/sprained bones and concussions from falling off things that only the most curious of kids manage to find themselves climbing on. He’d felt like he’d been part of some sick game of dodgeball, trying to move Ellie out of the way as each new calamity was hurled at them.
Finally, it felt like they had come out on the other side. After almost three years of calm, Joel had started to think they’d made it; he'd won. He’d proven to the world that he should be allowed to keep his baby.
But Joel got too comfortable, too complacent, and now Ellie’s paying the price.

“They came back into town, ‘bout six months ago.” Maria reaches over, her hand giving Ellie’s shoulder a soft squeeze before getting shrugged off. A sigh of relief comes from Ellie, palms holding her face as she leans on her legs. There is a sense of ease within her gut, but that means—
“Does she know?” Ellie’s voice staggers, her throat drying up the same way it has every time she thinks about her family. Could she even still call them such? “That I’m back? Have you told anyone?”
“Tommy knows—”
A small laugh bubbles up from Ellie, leaving as air through her nose and the faintest smile on her lips; “I didn’t think you guys were still on speaking terms.” Maria ignores the attempt at a joke, though she cannot help the quick bloom of happiness at seeing Ellie’s personality poking through the wreck she has become.
