Nishi had grown up in a karate family, so he'd known better than anyone else than most martial arts were fake. Oh, the community was real enough, and so was the exercise, but they wouldn't protect you in a fight. The moves themselves were not real. The feeling of security, the knowledge you could defend yourself... that was just an illusion.
Mixed martial arts was different. Watching that brand of competition had changed his life as a kid. And so Nishi had set out to learn as many styles of martial arts as he could, only to end up right back where he'd started: with karate.
"Yo! Nishi!" his master called, the force of his voice splitting the morning air in two. He hopped up the side of the mountain and landed lightly on the engawa. The corpse of a deer was slung over his shoulders. "Call the others, we gotta prep this thing."
The deer was huge. It must have weighed two hundred pounds. Ryoma carried it like a scarf.
Well, Nishi thought as he paused his own early morning stretches to go help, not quite back where he'd started.
After all, the Nagare School of Karate had no equals.
