“Pulitzer’s ship has been spotted, decked not too far from here-'' She turns away from Katherine and eyes her crew, their energetic eyes and bold shoulders. They land on the smallest member of her crew and she opens her arms. “From what we can see, Pulitzer aint on board. So we pillage the ship, grab any and all gold you can find.” Her voice takes on an almost grave tone as she scoops Les up and disarms his wooden sword from his flailing arms. “Kill anyone who gets in the way. Got it?”

Summary
It was an unfortunate series of events that moved the Jacobs family from Ohio to New York, but it came with a pay rise for Mayer, a new job for Esther, and a new school for their three children. All three had been struggling at their previous school, bullied for being Jewish, and Esther had high hopes that they would get on better in a state with many more Jewish people around.
Davey and Sarah were fifteen, Les was twelve and unknown to their parents, they were all relieved to be moving to New York- or, back to New York, considering they all had memories of living there before. Sarah called it her past life, Davey just called them memories, without giving it a name that had such huge connotations as Sarah’s did. Les didn’t call it anything, because he was twelve and not yet fully aware of the fact that it set them apart from everyone else.
“It’s called ‘The World’,” Esther was explaining to Sarah as Davey came down the stairs. He still wasn’t used to having a house with two floors, or a room to himself, despite it having been nearly a week since they had moved in.

Race shifted his backpack strap on his shoulder as he walked into the school. It was digging into his binder strap, and as he readjusted it he grimaced as he pulled the strap back in place under his t-shirt.
David had no idea where he was or what was happening. His sister had abandoned him as soon as he stepped inside the building, and he barely remembered the layout of the school from the tour they had a month earlier.
Race just wants to survive school without getting beat up or misgendered.
David doesn't like being in a new school, but hopes he can find more accepting people here.
