“I think I remember how to play,” Laurent said, and his voice was uncharacteristically shy. Damen had never seen him open himself to anyone other than Damen, and he knew that part of it was that Laurent was trying to prove himself to the other soldiers. He could not exchange crude stories or engage in sexual jokes and soldierly camaraderie, but he could give them this.

You Majesty,” repeated one of the men. “The Akielons come.”
Thunder sounded in Laurent’s ears; he struggled to keep his hands from forming fists as his heart pounded. So quickly, after all these years, his fear exploded. His fear and his hurt and his anger. Yet—how could the others stand there calmly? “They come?”
“Your Majesty—a group—we have a letter—" The man who had spoken held up alongside his still-bowed head a roughened, wrinkled, but clearly sealed, parchment.
Laurent took it. “How big is a ‘group’? How far away are they? And whence do they come?” The other scout started to speak, but Laurent snapped: “Lift your heads when you speak; I need to hear you more than the paving stones do.” They obeyed.
The second scout continued, “Nearly forty men, Your Majesty, traveling light, no wagons. Crossed into Belloy yesterday afternoon. They will be here by this evening. And—Your Majesty—” The scout hesitated. “The King is with them.”

Summary
Aimeric would do anything for the Regent. The idea of going to another country, to marry a barbarian and potentially kill him, is terrifying. But he will do it, if that's what is wished. He just isn't expecting the man he finds himself betrothed to, the closeness he finds with his guard, or the life and hope he discovers in Akielos.
Nikandros is deep in mourning for the friend he has lost. The marriage Kastor has arranged feels more an insult than kindness, but he is determined to treat his young husband well. His husband is a fighter, which helps, and Nikandros finds he admires one of the guards who has accompanied him.
Jord is just a soldier. As Akielos moves from enemy to ally, his focus is on protecting the young man he is sent to guard. He doesn't anticipate friendship from those he considers his enemy, but he finds it.

On instinct, he turned and saw a ridiculously big man with dark curls and dark skin who angrily walked away until he, as if feeling Laurent’s shocked gaze on the back of his head, turned and stopped. His brown eyes widened when he saw the mess on Laurent’s coat and shoes.Laurent hates Valentine's Day, but when a gorgeous man with a dimple in his cheek bumps into him on the street, something changes.

Laurent pauses on the front porch, staring at the house. He huffs and glances over his shoulder to where Govart is bitching nonstop as he hauls the prince’s bags from the trunk of his car. From one hell to another, he thinks to himself as he finally moves to unlock the door. He shifts the bag on his shoulder a little and chews on his bottom lip as he hesitates for just a moment before stepping into the home.
From the landing he can see into the living room and even partially the kitchen thanks to the open floor plan. The house is warm and comforting, like a hug from Auguste when they were children. It’s decorated just like his brother dresses, or at least like he used to when Laurent saw him more than once a year, luxurious but not gaudy, princely- no, kingly, with just a hint of fun in it. A few of the windows are open and the inside of the house smells just like the chilly late summer morning outside. Looking around, he tries to feel more happy than bitter or sad. It doesn’t quite work. When was the last time he saw Auguste, anyway?
