Summary
It’s been 4 years since the partners saw each other, and Dazai didn’t know if they could handle seeing someone with whom they had so much history with. History is a strange thing, Dazai thought. History is not seeing someone for years and still looking up when you tell a joke to see if they laugh at it. History is wrapping yourself with all the blankets you own to replicate the warmth you felt in their arms, not that Dazai knew anything about that. Being so close to someone that you end up on the other side of them, as Richard Siken puts it.

–If there is one thing to know about me it’s this: I would do anything for the praise of a certain detective. And anything means anything. Dedicate six years of my life writing for him? My pleasure. Join not one but two nefarious organizations to keep our rivalry going? Not the worst thing that I’ve done. Betray said organizations and put myself at risk? I never cared much for them anyway. Rewrite the entire world at a whim? The pen is already in my hand.–
A new organization called the Singularity has come to Yokohama, whose only goal is to be the only organization that employs skill users, and people have begun to notice. The first is Ranpo, whose mind has been waiting for a challenge, then Chuuya, whose loyalty refuses to falter, and then Sigma, whose ability has been used by others long enough. But even if the master detective, the loyal dog and the amnesiac casino manager have become aware, how do they plan to stop an organization as large and as threatening as The Singularity? Especially when someone has something in their possession that allows them to change the rules of the game with a few pen strokes? To kill a snake, you need to cut off its head.

“I’m hungry.” Kyuu proclaims, as they experiment with the durability of the couch’s cushions, going as far as to stretch out on them. Another time, Dazai would be horrified.
“You’re in Dazai’s hands now, kid. That’s their problem.” Chuuya wouldn’t have to child-sit, not alone at least. Could Dazai pull it off? Absolutely not.

Chuuya didn't know he had a birthday—or at least he didn't, until Mori informed him at 11:45 on April 28, several months after he was inducted into the Port Mafia. It leaves Chuuya wanting to throw up more than throw a party, but he isn't given the luxury of choice.

“I’m sorry to say this,” Fukuzawa starts, “when it’s been so soon. But I discussed with Mori and we had an idea.”
So they’re putting him back in the field already. Without his partner at that; they’ll try to find someone else he’s drift-compatible with and send him out again. Doppo reminds himself this isn’t them abandoning Osamu, that it’s just a necessity with how many Kaiju have been showing up recently and a precaution until his partner can get back on their feet. And they will get back up, be able to walk and stand and drift and fight and laugh and tease and annoy Doppo like usual.
“I understand. Are we going to go through some sort of try-outs?”
“Not exactly. Mori has someone in mind that we’d like you to drift with.”
“One person? It can’t be that certain that we’ll be able to pilot together.... Who is this?”
“You’ve heard of him: Nakahara Chuuya.”

Summary
“Can I talk to you?” Dazai’s voice sounded breezy and light but the words were something Chuuya expected never to come out of his mouth. Dazai. Asking permission to talk to Chuuya. Like he didn’t barge his way into Chuuya’s life every day of the week and then more.
Chuuya jammed a bookmark in his book, “you already are, dumbass.”
Dazai laughed in a jolting way and sat down on the couch. He brought his knees up to his chest and crossed one ankle over the other. He opened his mouth, closed it, switched which ankle was crossed. His eyes darted back and forth, avoiding Chuuya’s face. No teasing remarks about Chuuya’s book or the way he was sitting. He wasn’t even in Chuuya’s personal space.
Okay, Chuuya thought. Something is wrong.

Chuuya stopped breathing for a moment. Probably more than a moment. He was pretty sure he was turning blue, actually.
“W-what?”
Dazai was still fixating a point outside the window. They sighed, like Chuuya’s inability to comprehend a sincere apology from the Dazai Osamu was but a pesky inconvenience.
“I’m sorry”, they turned their gaze to Chuuya’s face, “for the drowning.”

Lowering his can, Dazai leans against the counter, “You know, Slug, with this time apart, I’ve had time to think in peace and quiet.” A brow twitches in irritation as Chuuya’s eyes narrow.
“Finally knocked some sense into yourself, eh?”
Dazai rolls his eye, “No, stupid.”
Chuuya sighs in impatience. Dazai continues, “I just wanted to share my new discoveries, for my own sake.” At this, Chuuya pauses.
Hardly, if ever, does Dazai share any part of himself with Chuuya.

"Chuuya just had to choose dress up, didn't he?" Dazai whined. "I'm not Elise."
Chuuya's hand tightened around his wrist, eye twitching as he finally turned to face him since they had gotten off the train, but he knew better than to cause a scene in the middle of the mall. "Got a problem with shopping?"
Pedestrians walked around them, minding their own business and ignoring their rather loud conversation. Dazai hummed and tapped his chin before saying thoughtfully, "Is this your way of getting back at me for making you wear that maid dress a few weeks ago?"
He sputtered, choking on air and letting out an indignant, "Huh??"
"So I'm right!"
His face burned. "Will you drop that already?!"
Dazai just laughed.
Or, Chuuya won a bet. Naturally, he used his winning rights to finally fix Dazai's barren wardrobe. It goes as well as expected.

Summary
A lovely yet lonely tune filled the room, bouncing off the walls and wrapping unexpected ears into a false sense of security. Clumsy fingers eased their way from one note to another. A singular mess-up within the song seemed to fit, adding to the tune and expressing an emotion the unwanted guest could’ve never thought to get from the one playing the piano.
He smiled bitterly at the sight, holding the scattered pages that were a joke of a report close to his heart, the pages wrinkled and folded, messing up the previously well-kept work.

“Dazai?!” He hissed quietly, glaring at the figure in front of him as he weakly tried to free his arm that had been trapped underneath the body of the figure.
“Good morning to you too, chibi~” They greeted with a yawn, their gruff voice having been an indicator that they had just woken up as well. Chuuya would feel guilty for waking them up if it wasn’t for the fact they decided to claim some of his personal space.
“The hell are you doing next to me? I gave up my bed for you!” He interrogated.
“It was too cold,” Dazai huffed, turning their head so they could look behind themself at their friend, “And Chuuya is warm! Especially clinging to my back all night, like a personal heater!” They said shamelessly, scooting back so their body pressed back against Chuuya’s chest once again, successfully trapping the older boy's arm further under their body and even having the nerve to flash a cheeky yet tired grin at him.
(Or in short; Chuuya wakes up to an unexpected guest in his arms.)
