Marjorie Graham lost everything after the Battle of Culloden — her parents, her home, the life her father had built for them in the Highlands. Fortunately, she had family left willing to take her in. She had come to live with her uncle in Edinburgh, helping him with his apothecary and learning everything there was to know about the business.
In December of 1765, her uncle sends her to the print shop of one Alexander Malcolm, with a proposition for a partnership between them. Marjorie expected danger with this arrangement as her uncle involved himself in Malcolm's smuggling. But what she did not expect was to find herself utterly captivated by the charm of a Frenchman by the name of Fergus.

"Marsali! Wait-" he tried but Marsali took no notice of his protests and his discarded words were quickly swept away by the warm air curling around them.
As they reached the middle of the road, she let go of his hand and he watched, dumbfounded, as she raised her face to the clouds above and spread her arms wide.

As Milady fussed around him with a glass of ice water, medicine and a dish full of lozenges he waited. And continued to wait, twisting the television remote around and around in his hands without actually using it.
Eventually, when she asked him if there was anything else he needed and he couldn’t take it anymore, he asked. “What is my punishment?”
Milady looked at him with a frown. “Well,” she said slowly, “you’ve been assigned detention on the first day you return back to school.”
Fergus waited for her to continue but all that came was silence and so he prompted, “...and?”
