Summary
The year is 1944. War has been raging in Europe for the last five years, though the United States' great war machine has only awoken in the past three. Young men from across America have already been drafted to the front lines, but you face a battle of a different sort.
On December 19th, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an executive order to form the Office of Censorship. As a young unmarried woman, still living at home with your parents, the position of mail censor at the District Postal Station located within U.S. General Post Office is an ideal job for you to undertake to support the war effort. You clock in to downtown Manhattan, you read hundreds of letters from men on the front lines each day, you ensure that all sensitive information is blotted out, and you clock out. Your work is simple, but it's vitally important to the war effort.
You just never expect to one day, in your daily pile of mail to sort through and censor, to find a letter addressed to you. Well, not you, specifically. But, to someone just like you.
Someone who can understand.

“I don’t like the way he was lookin’ at’chu.” He rumbles with a dark look over his shoulder as a lopsided CLOSED sign rattles against the grimy office window.
You smile at him sideways. “I reckon the poor man was just shy of ninety.”
“Old enough to know better’n to leer at a woman that ain’t his. I'm half a mind to—”
“Just leave it, Arthur.”
He grunts non-committedly. A heat-warped fast food cup skids by the empty parking lot like a tumbleweed on an errant desert breeze.
“And since when d’they start wantin’ a credit card damn near every place you go?” Anger quickens his stride and you find yourself looping your fingers around his belt and letting him lead you like a headstrong hound down the sidewalk.
“Since the years started beginnin’ with the number ‘2,’ baby.”
