Izzy was tired of trying. He was tired of the way Edward had wormed his way forcefully behind his defenses only to try and get back out again when he was bored of Izzy. The problem was that Izzy didn't know how to let him back out. He was banging against the walls alongside Ed trying to get them to crumble just enough to let Ed escape. It was useless.This time, Izzy was the one who gave up on trying to get past Ed's arm that held him at a distance. Every single morning tea or short laugh at his expense for being too uptight when he was just trying to keep this ship of imbeciles alive, made his resolve wear away a bit at a time. Every dismissal, or Ed flat out ignoring him, had him pulling away from the man, but, every time he tried to leave, the hand pushing him back gripped at his shirt to keep him from leaving. It was infuriating and confusing and Izzy hated it.

And that’s the worst fuckin’ part: he’s in this state because of his co-captains. Or he sorta is. Whatever. The semantics don’t fuckin’ matter. Izzy was already waking up because of a horrible dream (drowning – it’s always drowning). He wakes most nights, but on those other nights, he’s got an arm wrapped ‘round his middle or a stray leg curling around his own to keep him close. Even with the new, bigger bed Ed and Stede commissioned at port recently, they still sleep stacked on top of each other like one of Roach’s layer cakes.
But tonight…tonight Izzy woke on the edge of the mattress with his hands extended out, grasping for Ed and Stede. They were tangled in each other, both fast asleep, and Izzy had only barely made his escape to the bathroom before the dry-heaving and crying started.
