Ce n'est pas la mort qui l'attend de l'autre côté de l'Arche, mais un tout nouveau monde dont il n'a jamais entendu parler. Contraint de trouver un autre passage s'il veut revenir sur Terre et aider Harry dans la guerre contre Voldemort, Sirius doit entreprendre un voyage semi-initiatique ("ça débouche les yeux", lui dit-on) pour trouver une autre façon d'utiliser la magie que les baguettes auxquelles il est habitué.
Mais ce monde est si étrange... peuplé de chats géants et bipèdes, le cycle jour-nuit dure une année, et ne parlons pas des trois lunes. Heu... des quatre lunes.
Et pourquoi doit-il se coltiner une compagnie aussi désagréable que celle de Nanié du Toujours Nuit ? L'énigme des Cinq Races se met également en travers de son chemin mais, hé, Sirius a une priorité : retourner sur Terre. Les relations diplomatiques entre différentes planètes extraterrestre devront attendre.

Pendant ces tristes vacances d'été, il fait une rencontre dans le jardin de son oncle et sa tante qui soulagera quelque peu sa solitude. Pendant ce temps, Draco commence à faire d'étranges rêves prémonitoires, qui lui font douter de sa voie toute tracée de Mangemort en devenir.
Au fur et à mesure des semaines et des mois de cette sixième année à Poudlard, les énigmes s'accumulent... qu'est-ce que les Yeux Noirs ? Et les Enfants du Basilic ? Qui est exactement la nouvelle prof de DCFM ? Et ce nouvel élève de première année ?
La menace de Voldemort n'est pas ralentie par l'emprisonnement de certains de ses plus virulents partisans. La sécurité de Harry est toujours au coeur des préoccupations de l'Ordre et de Dumbledore, mais il se pourrait qu'il finisse par se découvrir des alliers inattendu au sein de l'école et en dehors.
