He thinks he must mumble some form or other of greeting, although it's fair to say most of his brain space is devoted to figuring out the difference between what looks to him to be the exact same product at starkly dissimilar price points.

Richie doesn't have any mention of a boyfriend, past or present, on his Wikipedia article and he’s never talked about it to any of them, probably. Maybe Stan, because he’s the only one who can keep secrets. If he talked to Mike about it, everyone would know, and if he talked about it to Ben he wouldn’t tell anyone except Mike and Mike would tell everyone anyway. Maybe Bev. (Is it homophobic if Eddie thinks Richie might tell Bev about being gay? Eddie googles but the results are inconclusive.)
None of them seem particularly well-versed in the subject, so he probably hasn’t talked to any of them. It occurs to him that maybe, if he was still in New York, he would assume that the people closer to Richie should handle it.
Is this Eddie’s job? As the person living in his backyard, it probably is. Eddie’s heart starts to thump worryingly in his chest. It can’t be his job.
But he’s been staying in Richie’s pool house. He’s been swimming in his pool. The most he contributes to Richie’s life is the occasional 48-pack of Fruit Roll-Ups. He hasn’t even chipped in for utilities.
Oh shit. It’s totally his job.

And at that point, what was he going to do? Unwash his face? Mess up his combed hair and go back to bed? He hadn’t fallen out of reality. He still required money, like every other human. For the Losers, their memories come back in waves, usually triggered by something they’d see, taste, hear, touch, or smell. Richie was painfully reminded of the crush he had on Cyclops as a kid when he watched the first X-Men film on a flight to New York to visit Bev. Now, lying across Stan with a Walkman in his hands, Richie’s attacked by sudden memories of Ben and his not-so-secret obsession with New Kids on the Block, hanging out in the clubhouse hammock listening to Nirvana, making mixtapes with all of his friends, all of them until he only sees Stan, the two of them drunk in Stan’s childhood bedroom, making a mixtape full of love songs for Eddie. Eddie. Fuck.

It's not that Eddie has been trying to lie, exactly. Given his mother's loose relationship with the truth, he's pretty sure lies of omission are not the same thing. It's just that things in his new office have been going really well, and Richie is being Richie about it, and this is maybe the most impulsive thing he's done since he was fifteen.
And there is maybe a tiny, tiny part of him that worries none of his coworkers will ever take him seriously again if they know the whole truth, for several reasons.
It's just, they may have a few risk-related concerns about him getting divorced ten months ago, moving in with Richie eight months ago, and having a clandestine courthouse wedding two months ago.
