Eddie stopped a few feet away. He looked at Richie, really looked at him for the first time in years. He saw the same haunted, restless look that greeted him in his own bathroom mirror every morning. He thought about the blank signature on the divorce papers upstairs. He thought about the antiseptic silence of his apartment and the medication he never took.
“Okay,” Eddie said, the single word feeling heavy and irreversible.
Richie blinked, the reaction lagging for a moment, clearly prepared for a protracted, dramatic argument. “Okay? Just like that? Don’t you need to... I don’t know, sanitize your stapler and file a formal resignation?”
“Let’s go,” Eddie said, already walking past him toward the revolving doors, his pace steady and deliberate. “Before I realize this is a terrible idea and you have me arrested of inciting a riot.”
