Reno seemed to be running on enough adrenaline for him to focus on things other than the fact that he wouldn’t be making out with Cloud in public or sharing a blunt with him in private; that all the new ways they’d found pleasure and comfort within the confines of their relationship had been ripped away overnight.
Reno is essential. Cloud is vulnerable. Mourning isn't really their thing, but neither is this whole "distance" bit.

Summary
Four years after Meteorfall, Rufus Shinra seemed to feel he had more or less successfully glossed over a lot of problematic decisions by his company. Shinra was still nowhere close to its old potential, held in check firmly by the presence of the more popular WRO. Few did not see the next announcement from Shinra as anything more than a naked PR move. Culture was coming back to the world – and Shinra wanted to held it arrive. There was a swiftly ignored press release about some new creative director the company had hired, but the first production was impossible to dismiss so easily. Loveless was being re-staged.
Shinra's new creative director is on a mission to keep on bringing back Loveless until it consumes the whole of pop-culture; Reno is not taking this lying down.

Reno hit pause, groaned and fidgeted on the hospital bed. Amongst the Turk's many supposed specialities, information and surveillance remained high on the list. Which was laughable given the infamous nature of the Turks at the best of times and their official listing as part of HR. But Tseng was something of dictator within the outfit. Reno may be too injured for field operations – something he dearly hoped would end soon – but not too incapacitated he could not watch video.
Reno might be in the hospital to recover after the fight at the pillar - doesn't mean he can't contribute in some fashion in the aftermath of Sephiroth's bloody attack on the Shinra building.

This was supposed to be a one-shot, but Reno is irrepressible, so I'm adding a few more chapters about his secret past, explaining how he became who he is, and the slight AU is because to make this story work timeline wise, the Nibelheim incident doesn't happen until after Elena joins the Turks and Cloud never left home until after high school.

The white of her top contrasted with the black skirt and the illusion was hard to shake. A man with blond, spiky hair and a dark purple jumpsuit entered and greeted the barmaid enthusiastically, stealing focus from the lead. Tifa cleared her throat. “Does anything else think this is a bit too familiar?”
