Eva lunged for the wall with a trembling hand. Click. The room flooded with soft yellow light that, after the pitch-black stairwell, felt blinding. She stumbled to the window, tripping over her own feet, and yanked the heavy blackout curtains shut with shaking hands, severing them from the outside world.
When she finally turned around, her green eyes widened in pure terror.
A monster stood before her.
A massive man, nearly two meters tall, encased from head to toe in black tactical gear. His face was completely hidden behind a balaclava, on which a grotesque white skull grinned menacingly. From the deep shadows of the mask, empty, dead eyes stared at her with no trace of emotion. His entire right side — from ribs to hip — was drenched in thick, dark blood that slowly dripped onto her clean carpet.
He didn’t look human.
He looked like Death itself had just crossed the threshold of her home.
