Pearl [.] is the only Gem Garnet has ever known possessing the ability to make completely serious determined proclamations while near-desperately clinging to someone’s arm.
      .
      7
The turquoise carbon cloud creature needs a wider variety of sulfates in its atmosphere to keep its density within healthy levels, and far less rapidly oxidising material than what Aventurine claims - so pearl provides, and says nothing. The several generations of marshland flora prone to fascinating microscopic branching disagree with the mulch Aventurine keeps having made for them, and Pearl can feel the sting start up in the (soft, weak, pliable) gem all the way on the back of her neck when she opens the packaging: far, far too acidic. She skims and steals foam from the bubbling infusion that would surely kill the angry red-thorned root it was originally concocted for and fixes the ratios and keeps buying them all time.
[.] She indulges in gleefully spiteful thoughts about the nosedive Aventurine’s reputation is bound to take once she’s gone - but then she remembers that this would mean the death of so many she’s cared for for so long, and she feels improper, forbidden, but above all frustrated tears prick at her eyes.
She wants to leave something, a trace of herself behind, even if it’s the last thing a proper pearl is supposed to do - and maybe, if she plans carefully enough, works quickly and discreetly enough, she can do just that for whichever pearl comes to take her place, and give her a chance to save some of them, if she dares.
      .
      10
“Well, it’s good to have you back, however strange the situation might be at the moment. We always were best as a set.” Yellow nods sagely. “I assume your return means your Diamond won’t be having you do any more bizarre things.”
“He’s not… she… I wasn’t ordered to do anything!” Pearl is quick to snap back, as it is a sore point that’s been prodded far too much recently, and an argument she’s had with so many over the centuries - including herself. Especially herself. But then she remembers hands pressed over her mouth, gentle as flower petals but immovable as stone, and, well - if she can’t be honest with her current company and hope they understand that particular situation, who ever will? “That’s… that’s not quite true. There was… one thing.”
One thing with all the weight of the world, pressing down - now gone.
“But you know what? I decided that I didn’t like it, and that it was wrong. Certainly, considering the problems it was causing us, there had been a miscalculation and oversight on… Pink Diamond’s part.” Pearl’s voice drops to an even lower, even more conspiratorial whisper - even though they are perfectly alone and disregarded as only pearls get to be, and her audience is already captivated by her talk of a diamond’s fallibility. “So I disobeyed a direct order.”
[.] It was fear filling her at first, when she at long last managed to let Steven know the secret - a terror of it finally, finally coming to light, the magnitude of what it would mean for him, for all of them, as well as a much more dense, personal, selfish fear of how their perception of her would change. Then the most potent relief she’d ever known, warring with endless regret and frustration with herself because she hadn’t managed to tell them all sooner. Because she’d failed when it had been so important, when it could have saved them so much pain (but she fights that down and stashes it away again and again - the could haves and should haves and desperate whys are for some other Pearls to deal with)
      [.] pride.
She did it, after all. She figured it out, and she did it! The terrifying renegade pearl, the quickest thinker of the notorious Rebellion, a whirlwind with both a sharp blade and a sharp mind, and armed with a willingness to use them - finding a loophole and throwing off the yoke thought to be baked into her very nacre, a fundamental limitation of her gem type that made so many so very complacent and so very careless in their dealings with pearls. And if she could share it, if she could encourage it in others…
She’s imagined running away often enough in her life. Clever warp skipping. Bluffing all the way to the Crystal System. Stealing away on a ship bound for the Earth’s wilderness, or just stealing one outright.
This, she imagines, feels almost as good.
      “Tell us how.”
She’s never heard Blue be this demanding. There is a new dimension to the looks she and Yellow both have fixed on her, and a new weight. So she rushes to oblige.
“Well… it was a rather interesting workaround, if I do say so myself. And quite… situational. But the finer points will take some explaining. Luckily,” Pearl allows some of that age-old disgust at being reduced to idle hallway ornamentation to seep through, “we seem to find ourselves with plenty of time on our hands.”

Steven being teleported out of Pearl’s gem. Neither gem even knew Pearl could do something like that, though considering the fact that out of all of them, she managed to store a good deal of items inside her gem, it wasn’t too surprising, but Steven wasn’t exactly an item.
      .
“I…there is something going on and unfortunately, I’m not the right gem to explain it to you. Not because I don’t want to, but because I can’t.” Blue eyes met green, as Pearl tried to get the smaller gem to get the gist of what she was saying.
      “Do you understand, Peridot?”
Honestly, no, she didn’t, but she wasn’t going to say that. If Pearl was trying to tell her that the situation at hand was something she was unable to explain, the engineer understood that; regardless of who she was now, Pearl was still…well…a pearl and if she ever had an owner, they could compel her to not say anything about /anything/ should they request it.
What she didn’t understand was the context in which a previous order was now coming back to her /now/.
      .
Pearl had wanted to tell Steven the truth for so long, to tell the others the secret she had been hiding for over several millennia, but unable to because of that damned order given to the very Diamond she had happily served. Even now, when it had counted, she couldn’t confirm or deny anything Steven told Amethyst and Garnet and worse, should those three have any questions, she wouldn’t be able to say anything.
      .
Granted, she didn’t know Rose during the rebellion and the war, but she did know the gem and finding out that, well, she wasn’t who she really said she was did sting something fierce, but like Greg, Rose Quartz was real to them and that was the person they loved and cherished. And Amethyst was sure Pearl felt the same way – you had to be blind not to see that the thin gem’s feelings were well past a decorated comrade, but those feelings had grown during the ‘Rose’ portion of her life.
That Amethyst would stake her favorite motor oil on.
She wasn’t sure if Peridot knew, given that Pearl couldn’t say one friggin’ thing about this to anyone, which meant no one had actually told her what was happening.
      .
Sometimes they could be seriously selfish – did Ruby just not care about the fact that Steven might be upset? Or Pearl? Having to keep that secret with no way of telling anyone, even when she desperately wanted to was bogus. Amethyst loved Rose, she truly, absolutely did, but learning about some of the stuff she did made her mad and just…
      Disappointed.
[.] Amethyst let it go. She knew how this went and for Steven and Pearl’s sake, she’d go along with it. She knew all about how to smile when on the inside you were just crashing down.
      .
Pink Diamond had manufactured a rebel gem in the form of Rose Quartz and had ordered her own pearl – Pearl, their first friend, someone they trusted the same way they had Bismuth and Ro… - to keep her mouth shut on events that had been falsified.
What if that simple statement had been more than a statement? What if it had been a direct order? From a Diamond to one of her subjects?
      .
Pearl looked, well in a word, devastated. Connie liked to think she had forged a kinship of friendship with her teacher, something could one day be unique between just the tow of them and in all that time, Connie couldn’t ever recall the look on Pearl’s face now.
There was guilt, a heavy amount if she guessed right, but also a resignation that the pre-teen had never seen before.
      .
“It’s…possible,” Pearl whispered, before one of her hands instantly flew to cover her mouth. She tried her best to remove, a muffled scream of frustration filling the stunned silence. Connie watched in horrified fascination as her mentor wrestled with her own hand, before turning her attention to Steven.
Once the muffled scream had rung out, the teen had immediately flinched, his face filling with guilt. “It’s possible and it happened,” he said, looking away. “Pearl was there.”
      .
Was Pearl…/the pearl/ to Pink Diamond??
Peridot had always suspected that Pearl had been made for a higher purposed gem, but she had thought a morganite or maybe a sapphire, but a Diamond?
      .
for every good deed she did, Rose managed to pull ten bad ones on people she pretended to care and love
      .
      2
She had seen that look on Pearl’s face before, the one enemies got to briefly see before they were cut down with a sword or her spear.
      .
that’s what hurt more than anything. Sapphire knew Pearl hadn’t done this deliberately; even without the whole story, which she knew Steven had only given the most important facts, the notion that…Pink Diamond had silenced Pearl and then never once thought to lift that direct hurt the seer – and the pearl – more than they thought possible.

A pearl turning against the Gem Homeworld, taking up arms, learning to fight with such skill that she could take down a squadron of Quartzes, all on her own- that was terrifying and impressive. But believable, if that was what she had been told to do. But for her to have gone truly rogue, so as to belong to no-one-

-that was far harder to wrap her head around.

That evening, Garnet couldn’t help but stare at the Pearl Which Was Not Rose Quartz’s. Said Pearl was busy sharpening her sword, but occasionally she’d look up, sensing her stare; Garnet would look away quickly, only to find at least a couple of her eyes pulled inexorably in her direction again a few moments later.

“What is it?” the Un-Owned Pearl asks at last, a little hostility leaking into her voice. Such anger is quite a disquieting thing to see on a pearl, who so often keep their faces blank.

      “N-nothing,” Garnet stammers.

The Un-Owned Pearl’s eyes narrows. She doesn’t say anything, but she clearly doesn’t believe her.

“Alright,” Garnet relents. “I was talking with Rose Quartz earlier, and… Well. Is it true, that you don’t belong to her?”

The Renegade seems unbalanced by the question. Her eyes go wide, a blush spreads across her cheeks, and the sharpening stone drops from her hand. Nonetheless, she straightens up. She sounds rather proud when says, “Yes. I suppose I don’t. Though I do belong with her.”

Garnet begins to think of her as the Renegade Pearl, after that. Time stretches on, and they spend more and more time with each other- sometimes heads huddled in discussion and planning, sometimes back-to-back during raids, sometimes just in calm, quiet moments, where they sit together and enjoy their freedom. Eventually, in her head, Garnet drops both the ‘the’ and the ‘renegade’, and the other Gem simply becomes ‘Pearl’.
      .
The problem, though, is that as more and more Gems come, it becomes harder and harder to tell them all apart. On Homeworld and the other colonies, every Gem is conditioned to be like their sisters, identical and interchangeable. That doesn’t work in the rebellion. Every Gem who joins does so because they are different, on some level. Rose Quartz is a general who takes advantage of those differences- she encourages every Gem to develop their own unique skills and interests, even if it is not something they would have otherwise been allowed to pursue. That requires some specificity; if you ask for Jade, you needed a way to show you meant the one who is an expert in Warp Pads, not the one who is really handy with a war-hammer.

Type. Facet. Cut. That is the traditional way to state your identity and designation, but the Crystal Gems find they do not much care for it.

More informal forms of identification crop up. When asking after someone, one might tap their forehead or their hip, to indicate the Gem-placement of the particular Flint or Spinal they are searching for. Sometimes shape-shifting would be employed, to get the message across. And in some cases, nicknames begin to develop.
      .
The original three though, they never needed any of that. If a Crystal Gem were to simply say Garnet, Pearl, or Rose Quartz, everyone knew immediately who they meant.
      .
Two months before the due date, Amethyst wonders aloud; “So are we just gonna be calling the baby ‘Rose Quartz’, or what?”

      Pearl chokes. “Of course not!”

      “Why not?”

“Because- because, the baby’s not going to be Rose, that’s why!”

“It’ll have her Gem,” Amethyst continues, stubbornly. She can sense Pearl’s furious horror, and she seems to be getting some strange satisfaction from it.

      “Amethyst,” Garnet warns.

Amethyst crosses her arms. “Just saying.”

They all know, deep down, that they can’t call the baby Rose. It’s just that they’re not sure what alternatives there have. Gems are simply called what they literally are; Pearl wonders if the baby could simply be ‘Meat’ or ‘Hybrid’. Garnet recalls the nick-names during the war, and wonders if the baby will eventually develop one of their own over time. Amethyst, a little more keyed in to human culture, eventually suggests ‘Junior’.

Greg laughs at the suggestion. “Not bad,” he says. “But Rose and I have already got a few ideas picked out.”

After some rummaging through the van, he manages to produce a sheet labelled ‘Baby Names’. It’s a pretty long list, since Rose found herself fond of almost every single one Greg suggested. There’s also an entire book on baby names, which tells information about the names’ origins and meanings. Amethyst takes the book with her to show Pearl, who is just as surprised as her; they never knew that the little names humans gave to identify each other meant anything.

Eventually, a name is chosen. Steven Quartz Universe. It seems to fit perfectly, somehow.
