Lilith looked over her shoulder. There was a hollow in the trunk of the tree just next to her. The head and neck of a white serpent was hanging out of it, looking directly at her. It had rosy little cheeks, bright violet eyes, and it was wearing a tiny top hat. For a moment, Lilith felt a strange flutter in her chest area. The little creature actually seemed quite cute.
Then the damned thing spoke.
“Nice to meet you!” it said with a toothy grin. “You’re Lilith, right? I’m Lu–”
“AAAAAGH!!!”

Like how his perfectly blank expression revealed every previous emotion on his face to be nothing more than a painted mask for others to see, now even that blank canvas was stripped away to show what was truly underneath - a black despair, fathomless beyond mortal comprehension, resembling nothing so much as that crawling void she had glimpsed a lifetime ago at the heart of Hell.
“I…can’t,” Lucifer said simply.
And then he was gone. No flicker of magic or flash of a portal. Just gone.
