They startle, confused. It’s dark. There’s a soft yellow glow but it’s not enough to see by. Their breathing is shallow. They don’t make any sudden movements. They are soaked from sweat, mouth dry, filled with dirt and sand. Something is tangled around their legs. Their dog tags press against their throat, almost choking them. It’s hot, wherever they are. They can feel the sweat clinging to them, dripping, salty liquid slipping down their temples, into their hair, pooling in the shell of their ear. Their ears are ringing. From the bomb. From—from the beeping machines—
The thing on top of them has quick breaths. Panting. Directly in their ear. Its breath is stinky, but almost in a pleasant way. A soft tongue licks their ear, their cheek, over their mouth, reminding them to breathe.
They draw in a breath, sucking, lungs aching. Throat raw. They don’t know where they are—
Their fingers grasp the thing on top of them. Fluffy. Soft.

Nails clacking on the linoleum. A soft, “Find Robby!” Excited panting, dancing nails, a big fluffy dog barreling into them. As he’d been trained to do, Andy bullied his way into Robby’s lap, pushing his big fat head between their arms and legs and chest, pushing his shoulders into the gap, pawing obnoxiously on Robby’s legs until they lowered them to sprawl in front of them. And then Andy—all 150lbs of him—plopped into Robby’s lap and leaned most of his weight onto Robby’s chest. He started panting, tail thumping against Robby’s leg, all stinky, wonderful dog breath right into Robby’s shoulder.
It was hard to breathe for another reason—this one much more welcoming.
Robby buried their hands into Andy’s brindle fur, hugging him close. Pretending their eyes weren’t warm and wet. “Good boy, Andy,” they murmured into his fur.
