Summary
Carlos is relieved that he is able to work in a real laboratory with real scientists. Leaving his small home and family behind, he moves to a small Desert Town named Night Vale with his father's old radio. Everything starts out normal, until, for no reason, his radio cuts in and out of whatever station he is listening to.
His coworkers say that it is a town ghost that takes over the sound waves, but Carlos doesn't believe in ghosts- he is a scientist. But soon he hears this voice, and it begins talking about Carlos himself. Who is this voice that is speaking? What does he want? He says he is a radio host, but Carlos just cannot believe it. He does, however, begin to try to find out what is actually happening, whereas everyone else in this small strange town accept the voice as a form of evening entertainment.
Carlos finds out that the answer is much more complicated than the question.

The Night Vale Historical Society is throwing a barbecue for a tragedy that no one is allowed to talk about. It's the usual week's news in Night Vale except for one tiny detail-Cecil isn't the one reporting it. And as Head Intern Jessica ignores her normal inclination to not do any work ever (you don't become head intern by being a go-getter) to fill in for him while Carlos conducts his desperate search, she's beginning to think that maybe Cecil isn't the only one who'll disappear.
