He set his glass aside and rolled onto his side, facing Hannibal fully, his body language an open invitation, seductive in its vulnerability, the way his shirt rode up to expose a sliver of hip. “Oh, it’s you, alright. Always you. But if we’re talking flames, you’re the one fanning them, strutting back from the bar like some debonair devil in cream linen. Makes a man forget the sand in his toes and remember… other sensations.” He winked, the sass evident in the arch of his brow, but his voice softened, laced with the depth of their bond. “Ten years, Hannibal. And I still can’t look at you without feeling like that cliff all over again, terrifying, exhilarating, inevitable.”

“I… I feel like you’re the only person I can trust,” Will said finally, voice raw, almost a confession.
“You can trust me,” Hannibal replied, tone hushed, intimate, “even when it feels like you cannot trust yourself.”
Something inside Will seemed to break open then. His eyes flicked toward Hannibal, shadowed and glassy, a tremor running through him not entirely born of illness. His voice dropped lower, rough with something more dangerous than fear.
“Hurt me.”
Hannibal went very still. His eyes searched Will’s face, dissecting him with silence. The weight of the pause was almost unbearable.
Finally, his voice came soft, careful, cutting. “Is your desire for pain… self-deprecating?” A measured beat. His gaze sharpened, intent. “Or sexual?”

Hannibal was still several feet away from Will when he slowly brought the sword he had kept behind him into view. “You seemed quite enamored with this a few weeks ago. Your intrigue inspired me to bring out its full potential.” Much like I did with you.
Will smiled nervously, his heart picking up pace again. “Oh? Is that so?”
Hannibal brought the sword to Will’s face, brushing the flat side of the blade against his cheek. “Shall I demonstrate?”
Will breathed heavily, the cold metal kissing his old scar. His eyes fluttered, unsure if Hannibal was bluffing. He swallowed hard before speaking, grasping at the taut fabric of the couch cushion. “Do you know your way around a sword?”
Hannibal smiled wickedly. “Less than you, I’m afraid. However,” as he spoke, he turned his wrist, the edge now running along Will’s vulnerable skin. He applied pressure, and gently dragged the blade until Will hissed. Not bluffing. “I’m quite familiar with its consequences.”

Will felt his anxiety suppress, the adrenaline began to slow its pump and he further relaxed into Hannibal’s hands. He leant forward, throwing his weight so his chin landed on the other man’s shoulder. Hannibal’s strong arms wrapped around him, holding him up off the ground as his knees buckled.
“I’ve got your best interests at heart, Will. It’s when you stray from me we lead to complications.”
“I trust you,” Will replied.
He most certainly did not.
