Summary
As the water began to gush through the broken window, Clancy wondered if there was any getting out of this. He flailed about as the water rose, his pink hair stuck to his forehead as he gasped for breath. Clancy could just about see Torch begin to swim for the hole left by the creature, and his own limbs copied each kick and stroke in a desperate attempt to follow.
Clancy tried to ignore the way that his body burned with exertion, or how the reflection of the sun on the surface of the ocean didn’t seem to be getting any closer. His lungs felt like they were on fire, each precious breath of air held inside disappearing by the second.
Torch seemed to be getting further and further away, as if Clancy wasn’t going anywhere despite his best efforts to swim upwards – his outstretched hand seemed to do nothing when no one realised he was falling behind.
or: Clancy almost drowns during the attack on the submarine, and realises that maybe surviving was a good thing after all.

Torchbearer stood and watched, as all the progress and the fight he fought with Clancy crumbled down. They defeated Nico and the Bishops, but at what cost?
Clancy offered the blood red robe to him. Recognition escaped Clancy's eyes. He could not see the yellow that Torchbearer dawned anymore.
Torchbearer had to do something. He had to find Clancy again, but this wasn't Clancy. No, this Clancy was gone.
So he does all that he knows how to do. Disappears into the air, as if he was never there.

Clancy becomes a bishop, and Torchbearer uses his projection traveling powers to find him again, and ends up somewhere outside of Trench, somewhere in the past.

Torch watched the grey concrete towers on the horizon.
He didn’t often allow himself moments like this; ones where he reminisced on what his life was like before he found the green expanse of Trench. The Torchbearer did not consider himself to be sentimental towards his past that was coloured in shades of slate and gunmetal, but on odd occasions his mind drifted back there.

Summary
All of Dema was watching him. Not a single television set was off, even if it wasn’t actually being watched by anyone. The Bishops were watching him act like a fool in the security of their respective towers. Each of them smiled to themselves, knowing that their good will was underway.
They had revised every single aspect of this show, down to the most minute detail, to make sure Clancy couldn’t step out of line. It couldn’t happen again. Another insubordination and he’d secure a ticket to a fate worse than he could ever imagine. Nico would make sure of it. After all, he was but a revered shepherd trying to guide a lost sheep back home.
Meanwhile, Clancy, cold and wet from the snow, prayed for a god, any god, to smite him down.
Or Clancy is a pop star in Dema, and Torchbearer tries to rescue him.
