Monday, August 20, 1984.
Learning about rogue government experiments and parallel nightmare dimensions had a way of making you re-evaluate your priorities. Lately it felt like everything was a hill he wanted to die on and also nothing was a hill he wanted to die on, a weird mix of puberty and near-death experience-induced nihilism. (That was Dustin’s theory, anyways, when he’d voiced his thoughts to him.) If nothing really mattered in the grand scheme of things, if D&D monsters could appear at any time to steal them away, he might as well do what he wanted, right?
Objectively, he was doing fine in school, but eighth grade was definitely harder than seventh grade and it was hard to transition out of summer mode. His body didn’t want to wake up early. He missed sleepovers and movie nights. He kept wanting to reach over to Will during school to ground himself, but he couldn’t. People already said so many mean lies about Will; he couldn’t add fuel to the fire. Why couldn’t summer have lasted forever? No bullying, no homework, no girls.
