Lance swims ahead, a feral grin on his face as he dips and dives between craggy rock outcroppings and thick forests of seaweed. His fins glide through the water as effortlessly as a bird’s wings in the sky, any possible resistance negated by the smooth slippery skin. He’s fast, even for a shark, he was the fastest in his entire clutch of seven pups. That’s working in his advantage today, as his pursuer is particularly relentless, following him determinedly despite the obvious difference in their speeds.

Lance is eyeing him like he’s a puzzle, the magenta tinge on his cheek from the setting purple sun reminds Keith of something buried so deep that he’s almost startled at the memory of the smell of gunfire, the hoarseness of Lance’s voice, and the clasping of their hands together. The day Lance woke up from a near death coma to make the shot that saved them from Sendak.
“What do I smell like?” It’s a pointed question, like Lance would love it if Keith could tell him his cologne or his lotion by name, and he could, but he doesn’t. He answers more truthfully.
“Home.” A simple confession, yet all encompassing.
Lance doesn’t stop looking at him, but the corner of his mouth twitches into a smile.

Just as Lance was about to pop the first slice into his mouth, the satisfying tear of the fruit awakening something childish and innocent within him– he felt eyes staring black holes in his direction.
He didn’t have to glance in Allura, Shiro, and Pidge’s direction to know it wasn’t them. Slowly, Lance turned his head toward Keith as the orange slice hung midair just a few inches from his mouth.
“Uh, Keith?” Lance said, blinking at the boy as his eyes didn’t dare move from the fruit in his hands. “You alright, buddy?”

“Oh my god, would you just shut up? For like two fucking seconds?” His hands are fisted at his sides. “I literally haven’t gotten two sentences in the whole time I’ve been back!”
Lance grimaces, eyes narrowed. “Don’t tell me to shut up!” he yells.
Keith is angry, and tired, and uncomfortable. He just wants Lance to get it. He wants to say something that will hurt. Without thinking, he throws his arms up and shouts, “God, you’re so annoying!”
Or, adulting is hard. Keith and Lance do their best.

“Here, take these. You looked cold.”
Lance is holding out some black fabric, and it’s only when Keith tentatively reaches out that he realizes that they’re gloves. And the fingers have been cut off, which somewhat defeats the point, but the gesture isn’t lost on Keith. “Thank… you?” The gloves are warm in his hands and warmer still when he puts them on.
“No problem!” He smiles brightly, in the way that would make galaxies jealous, holding magnitudes beyond. “I know they probably aren’t the best, but it’s better than nothing!”
It’s hard to fathom what more to say, especially when Keith already doesn’t talk to Lance in class since they aren’t in the same desk pod, but it luckily doesn’t matter because Lance gives a little wave and runs off back towards the playground, towards the wood chip game, almost stumbling over himself.
As he watches the blue boy walk away, Keith notices that Lance isn’t wearing any gloves himself.

Caught between the fluttery feelings of affection and the confusion of his idea of Lance constantly getting turned on its head, he’s forced to face the reality that maybe he never really knew Lance all that well to begin with. And maybe it’s about time he let Lance show him.

It was still summer, so the night was almost as hot as the day, but the wind that swept through the trees was fresh and made the hairs on Sokka's bare arms suddenly stand up.
