Pippin did not answer. At another time he would have risen to the barb, offered up the wide-eyed wounded innocence that had gotten him out of many a scrape, perhaps even found a way to slyly imply Gandalf’s culpability instead of his own – but he was sick and frightened, and something still hurt somewhere deep, something he did not want to think about.
Pippin reckons with what Sauron left of him.

The backstage of the Muppet Theatre. The usual pre-show chaos — costumes half-worn, props in the wrong hands, a chicken where no chicken should be. KERMIT stands at his desk, clipboard in hand, radiating the quiet, fragile authority of a man who has confused managing a theatre with managing his own sanity.
GONZO enters stage left with the confidence of someone who has never once considered the consequences of his own mouth.
GONZO: Hey, Jirmit, can we run the—
Kermit's whole body goes rigid. Not startled-rigid. Not angry-rigid. The specific, full-body rigidity of a being who has just heard a sound that shouldn't exist and is now recalculating the entire foundation of his reality.
KERMIT: (very still) ...What?
GONZO: You know. Jim. Kermit. Jirmit!
Kermit makes a noise. It is not a word. It is not quite a sound. It is what happens when a voice tries to object to its own existence — a distressed, reedy, deeply undignified kazoo of the soul.
