    At the door stood Artemy Burakh. He looked as bad as Daniil felt. Possibly worse, which certainly said something. There was a new bandage wrapped over the cloth of his bicep. The rest of his smock was stained and, in places, charred. His hair was a mess, unwashed and tangled, accompanied by several days' worth of stubble. His brow was characteristically furrowed. Then he spotted Daniil, and his eyebrows shot up, eyes going almost comically wide. In less dire circumstances, Daniil might have laughed.

    "Burakh," he said, wincing at the dry rasp of his own voice. "Do not come any closer. In fact... it may be best for you to leave the building altogether."
